Should we bring back the death penalty?

But just because you feel vengeful doesn't justify it or mean that it should be considered in a sentence. I personally don't think that it is a very healthy way of coping with grief either and I don't see how capital punishment would truly comfort anyone in an already horrible situation. Not in the long run.

Maybe more support should be offered to a victim but vengeance is not the answer!

As I said earlier on the justice system isnt right, I dont agree with murder for a murderer but if my family was murdered I probably would feel extremely vengeful and be very pissed they got like a few years for it.

Thought I would re quote what I said there. So you could read it right. Yes I feel vengeful but dont agree with death penalty.

I think it should but only if u murder someone. an eye for an eye. the reason ppl reffend is becauad its so nice in prison. they get everything it makes me really mad

That has to be one of the most ill-informed comments I've ever read. I give up.

Not true. There was actually a documentary on recently and one of the inmates was saying "why would I want to leave prison? Ive got it better here than on the outside, I dont have to work, I get fed, if I left prison id be worse off"

To answer the original question....its a hard one. On the whole, no, I dont think the death penalty should be brought back because it would never be regulated enough and inocent people could be put to death.

HOWEVER....in the cases of peadophiles and rapists for example, particularly the ones that reoffend, I beleive that they should be exterminated. They will never be "cured" so they are a drain on society. There is no point in keeping them alive in prison on our taxes....I cant say I would care if they were killed.

It is widely claimed that the death penalty is more expensive than life in prison...

Example: https://www.economist.com/node/13279051

It is also claimed that harsher prison conditions may actually increase the rate of re-offending (see interesting link in my previous post about the prison in Norway). Surely the aim of prison is to reduce the chance of re-offending?

Yeah prison should be more concerned with reducing re-offending than with punishing people.

The term, exterminated. No matter who directed at, gives me chills.
Where do you draw the line at who you exterminate?
Its very Nazi.

I just think that the peodaphiles, serial murderers and rapists are clearly not wired right, mentally something is very wrong this IMO can not be 'fixed' or rehabilitated but does this mean they deserve to be put to death = no ............they need to be in a secure enviroment for life (meaning life) so they can not harm anyone else.

exterminated - seriously? to me people who think its right to kill no matter the reason are no better than the people they want put to death in the first place.

Mmmm, interesting comparision. Most of the high ranking Nazis were hanged.

I know.
I've spent years studying Nazi history.
The term is disturbing, the idea of exterminating criminals, as i said, where is the line drawn. Murderers? Rapists? Theives?

The word exterminated sounds a bit like fleas in a house...but, *if* anyone was punished by death...for me...it would be serial rapists that murder children...and there would have to be clear DNA evidence. But, if prisons were harsher for scums like that, I would be happy if they rotted away in jail. I have no sympathy/empathy or hope of recovery for those monsters.

As have I.

There are specific types of crimes that can result in capital punishment being used. Many states just don't go willy nilly executing people.

For the record, despite what I said about prison being there to reduce re-offending rates I largely agree with this.

I agree with that too. Prison should be about reducing re-offending and protecting society from people that are a danger to it.

for me murder is wrong, so I could never be in favour of the death penalty, nobody should be allowed to say who lives or not, reducing yourself to the level of the criminal makes you no better.

I find people really disturbing, whenever a terrible crime/murder is committed you'll get stream and streams of people writing down really vivid forms of punishment and cruelty they would inflict on the perpetrator, and we wonder how people are capable of doing them when so many are capable of not only thinking them but taking joy in sharing their grotesque ideas with others.

I completely agree with this! I find it very disturbing too and I also fail to see how it would really bring any kind of peace or resolution to the victims family. I just don't believe in revenge.

Where did i say there was? I simply commented that the use of the word "exterminate" disturbed me! I questioned for the lady who used it, how far she felt "extermination" of criminals should go...

I agree also.

Just recently with a murder thats happened and been in the media, There was facebook comments underneath the photo of the person who has commited the crime (but had not yet found guilty) not only is it scary that people join in on these 'witch hunt' type situations seeing how many people agreed with an eye for an eye and felt comfort in wanting the person tortured then killed etc its just awful and yes i also felt empathy towards the suspects family and what they are going through and having to read.......... I no doubt (if guilty) agree that this person needs to be locked away for life so he cant harm anyone else, nothing will change what has happened and i dont believe that revenge solves or helps anything.

its not about revenge, its about the fact, could you live in a world knowing youre sharing the earth with your childs killer? how is it ok for them to still have their life, when your child no longer has theirs. i beoueve they wont truely get their punishment until after death, so why put that off? (im talking about murderers, not theives etc. i believe the punishment should fit the crime).

Don't make out that the people venting their anger and horror over something like they are low life scums like the murderers...that is such a low dig at someone. Its common and normal for innocent, normal, nonviolent victims (and victims extend to anyone who is affected by a crime, whether they knew that person or not) to feel such horror and hatred to say things they would never normally say...I have heard it on BnB myself! Victims are victims...and those feelings are part of being a victim and shame on anyone to judge that.

I fully agree with this! People should never downplay the emotions and feelings of a victim.

really? this is ridculous! so just because the victims or people that are sickened by these murderers actions, are in favor of the death penalty, WE are the "grotesque" ones? what happenned to the murderer in all this? all of a sudden we are worse then them? look, its plain and simple, a person who murders another person with premeditation, deserves to die!
