Should we bring back the death penalty?

sorry havent read all the posts...but no i dont think it should be bought back...what i do think is that our prisions should be made much more harsh.

even in a maximum security prision inmates can have access to TV, nice food and other luxuries.

Before if a serial killer or pheodphille was put in prision then they would be locked in a box with only a hour excercise a day...none of this protective crap.

the fact they say Mary west had a TV and duvet in her cell disgust me...and now there allowed to vote!

I also wish that the government would introduce the working prisions so that inmates should be made work and the money should be used to give back to the family/victims.

EDT: just read some of the post...i dont claim to know anything about our system...only what i see on the new. but from what i see is people commiting what should be serious offences only given short sentances in what seems like east going prisions.

I don't believe prisoners should vote either.
No TV i also agree with, but i don't see why no duvet?

still dont get why TV is such an issue

It is a privilage in prisons, its paid for by the prisoner it has the 5 basic TV channels..... lets face it half the time nothing decent is on tv even with hundreds of channels to watch anyway.......

I agree with marley's posts...............i guess it depends on how you view prison, ......your freedom is taken from you and X amount of years of your life (and life is short) that you wont ever get back has gone...........all the things you miss out on all the family events, getting married, having children, holidays, meals out, nights out, sitting in a pub garden in the summer, having a bath!!!, bbq's....going out whenever we want.......... all the little things we all take for granted........all the things we dont even think about is what prisoners do and what they miss and thats what is punishing them most..........having a tv is a grain of sand to the beach they are missing out on x

So, you think a murderer should get to watch tv because he's going to miss out on family events, getting married, having children, ect. ect.? They wouldn't be in the position they are in, with having their rights/privileges in life revoked, if they hadn't have made the decisions THEY made themselves. What about the person they murdered? Did they not deserve to be married, have children, see them grow, ect?

They don't deserve privileges of every day life luxuries. (Obviously depending on the crime.)

I haven't read the thread but I believe in an eye for a eye and think the death penalty should come back. And obviously given in the right situations. U can't cure evil

you didnt understand that post at all...What i meant is that TV is insignificant to what they are missing out on and what their punishment is (their freedom) .........not they should be able to watch TV because of what they miss out on!!!!......AND not being able to have a TV is not a punishment compared to the punishment that being in prison is full stop..!!!!!..... i have experiences on both points of views from the victims friends/family point of view and prisoners friends/family point of view...........there so much more to it...........not all prisoners are actually filled with evil......... not all victims families actually are filled with so much hate that they want another human to be treated like an animal even if they have done a terrible thing............ and believe it or not some prisoners are actually innocent, and being in Prison could happen to anyone.....you, a family member , a friend...your son, your daughter....intentionally or not.

Ah. I get what you mean now. I did read it wrong, thinking you meant they are missing out on so much already - why take something like tv away from them.

Tv is insignificant to what they will miss out on, but I think there are probably very few instances where people end up in prison if they aren't the guilty party.

and like I said, I don't think they should have the luxuries of every day life if they've committed a crime to land themselves in prison. Jail is a little different, obviously as the crime is less severe/serious.

Here we only have prison, so the range of crimes vary greatly. From people in for a week to obviously life.

Ahh, I understand how my response could have been taken a little more harsh than intended, then.

Here we have jail - which is for less severe crimes and prison is for severe crimes, (murderers, rapists, ect)

Whit, you'd be surprised at how many murderers, rapists, and child molesters are in jail "awaiting transfer" to a prison. It's unreal.

I saw a Louis Theroux programme about that. It was really scary the people that were being held in jail

I went on a jail tour when I was in college (aka university to you UKers :haha:) and there was a terrorist being held there. Like, almost suicide bomber terrorist. We talked to him.

The worse prison doc's i have watched were ones in Africa........so much violence murder and rape amongst the prisoners, it was all about kill or be killed, be raped or be killed it was just disgusting......and thailand all different types of prisoners and juveniles held in crowded cells with child molesters and Mexico where the prisoners run the prison also violence rape murder, its just beyond belief some doc's i have seen on American prisons shock me too.

My dad is a retired deputy sheriff and worked at a jail for the better part of 30 years. It's really not that bad. Depends on the jail and the area and the level of respect between the officers and the inmates. Like, for example, my dad was old school and the inmates knew that. If one misbehaved on a block, the whole block got privilages taken away. So, they respected my dad and he respected them. But that's another topic....

yeah definitely depends but there are some horrid ones out there..........ross kemp (i love him lol) made some doc's about prisons.........they were very interesting yet disturbing to watch. x

That has to be one of the most ill-informed comments I've ever read. I give up.

In the USA, people do reoffend to get back into prison though. Sometimes, it's better than what they have on the outside. My dad said he always knew a storm was coming because there would be a huge upward surge in the number of arrests, especially with homeless people.

People re offend for various reasons. Lack of education which means less job prospects, which mean they commit crime to afford the life style they want. Inability to kick drugs while they're inside so commit crimes to fund their habit. To some people crime is all they know. It's so abundant in their immediate community that they find it impossible (and many don't want to) to break ties.

With some criminals, no, prison isn't harsh enough to act as a deterrent, but these are often seasoned criminals who re-offend because of many reasons, maybe one mentioned above. But to your average joe, who made a mistake, then yes I would say prison was enough to prevent re-offending. I know I wouldn't like the idea of going to prison (not that I would commit a crime anyway!!)
