Side effects of IVF drugs?

Hi,

I am about to start my first cycle of IVF in the next few months. I suffer with a phobia of vomitting and have had lots of treatment (CBT, hypnotherapy etc etc) over the past few years as this phobia was stopping me from conceiving.

We have been ttc for over 2 years now and have out consent/pre treatment appointment at John Radcliffe on 5th October.

I am terrified of the side effects of the drugs for down regulation/overian stimulation and the ones used on the egg collection day too. Can someone give me some honest information about what side effects I can expect? If I was to experience nausea/sickness would they let me take prescribed anti emetics?

Many thanks

Caline

Hi

I've had no real physical symptoms from the drugs but quite bad emotional ones!! I guess the only thing I have had is a bit of bloating from stims and I had an upset stomach yesterday after the sedation for EC. They could have given me something after EC which helped with nausea but I had no problems. Have been bit of an emotional wreck though... but not sure if this is the drugs or just the stress of the whole process.

Good luck

Kath xx

Hi Kath,

Thanks for that. Did they offer you something for you stomach yesterday? Do you know what drugs they gave you? Maybe I could ask for an anti sickness drug before the procedure? Were you sick just once?

Sorry, they probably all seem like silly menial questions, I am just so anxoius.

Did you get many eggs yesterday? All the best with this round of treatment.

Thanks

Hi

I was never sick or felt nauseous, just had the other end iykwim!!

I only had paracetamol before I went to theatre, they left my line in for a while after incase I needed sickness drugs but I don't know what they would have given me if I had needed it.

I was really nervous about EC, I am a complete contol freak and hate the thought of not being able to control a situation. But it was so easy, I promise you. I don't remember a thing about being knocked out, I had a slight sore throat when I woke up from the tube but seriously NOTHING else at all.

I might be worth expressing your concerns to your consultant and finding out what type of sedative you get. I think you only really get nausea if you've had a full on general but most places use heavy sedation instead cos you don't get the side effects.

We got 7 eggs on Wed, 5 fertilized and we're (FX) having 2 put back later today.

xx

Thanks for the reassurance. Like you, I like to be in control, which is maybe why I am so scared. I can deal with diarrhoea. just not nausea or sickness.

Is this your first round? Hope the transfer goes well today. Where aboutr are you having your treatment? I am under John Radcliffe in Oxford.

I've not started IVF yet but wanted to jump in with some advice. I had a laparoscopy recently and was quite nauseous after the GA so the nurse put me on a drip to get the fluids back up. As soon as I'd had that I was fine. Not sure if the sedation would have the same effect as the GA but could be something to mention or keep up your sleeve in case you do feel nauseous.

Good luck, I hope it all goes smoothly for you x

Thanks. We're at Salisbury, leaving in about half an hour for ET!!!!!

I know it sounds corny but you just have to remember why you're doing all this and that the end result will far outweigh any down sides.

I know and thats why I am putting myself through all of this. It took me 5 years to pluck up the courage to start trying , and ofcourse, we never thought we would get to this stage.

Fingers crossed for ET XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXx
