I put this in here as I keep getting told that Simeon wakes still because he is breastfed. Have any of you got any tips on getting your LO to sleep through? He is now in his cot, but he is still waking every 2/3 hours. His pattern during the day is:

6.30am breastfeed, change, play
7.30am nap (1 hr)
8.30am breastfeed, change, play
11.00am nap (1/2 hr)
11.30am breastfeed, change, play
2.00pm nap (2hrs)
4.00pm breastfeed, puree food, change, play
6.30pm 1 bottle 6/7oz formula
7.00pm bed

I was trying to not let him nap as much, but he cries if he is tired and doesn't get his nap. When he wakes during the night, he always wants a feed too, even if it is for 2 minutes - I know it is comfort feeding, but if I just leave him and put his dummy in he screams - and he isn't a crying baby usually so I panic and just feed him.

That sounds like quite a lot of napping BUT all babies are different. Hebe just has an hour in the morning and an hour in the afternoon and has slept through for a long time. I dont think them being BFd has anything to do with them sleeping through although formula is much harder to digest so that could be why some babies seem to sleep for longer on it.

Personally I'd try cutting the napping down a bit first and see how that works. :)

Thanks Lisa. I'll try cutting it down... maybe his afternoon nap could be postponed for an hour :) I'll try. x

It's not always easy and some need more naps but it might be worth a try hun. :)

I dont bf... but I agree, that sounds like alot of napping... But that is how Jasmine was up until a few weeks ago too... In case you are interested in comparing routines... here is mine:

7:00am wake up, change and breakfast cereal
8:30am-9:00am- 7oz bottle
1-2 hour nap
11:00am- lunchtime, yogurt, toast and fruit
12:30 or so- 7oz bottle
nap about 1-2 hour depending on how long the morning nap was
3:00 or so- 7oz bottle
5:00- dinner, veggies, meat etc
6:00- bathtime then bottle and bed by 7:00 at the very latest.

She has slept through from 7:00pm for the past couple months. I weaned ealier though, and Jasmine was on 2 meals at least at your babies age, I have no idea if that has anything to do with it or not.

I agree, try cutting out the 1/2 hour nap maybe... and personally I would cut out 1 night feed at a time... if you know its just comfort feeding, then go for it. If he will take a soother, then maybe try that?

Its all what you are comfortable with! All babies sleep differently, there are a couple bf babies who slept through early on here, and lots of ff babies to... Personally, from my experience, I found Jasmine slept longer once I switched to formula only. I did try to bf for the first month...

Thanks Ryder, I will definately try to cut down on his naps. I will cut out the morning nap and cut down on the afternoon nap... if he lets me lol. He didn't go down until 2.30pm today and woke up at 3.00pm then I took him to the park, but he is just drifting back of now, but if he has another 30 mins, it's still a whole hour less than usual, I'll see if that makes a difference tonight. I'll also try some breakfast tomorrow... I have readybrek at the ready! :)

Thanks both of you. x

Brenn is a year old and still doesn't sleep through. Trust me when I say I have tried and done everything, short of letting him CIO, and nothing has worked. I have spoken to many parents who have told me theirl LO didn't sleep through for a long time, so I know I am not alone. Dr. Sears has a good sleep book, so it might be of some help to you.

I would say alot more feeds in the day hun. Lots of sleep in there. My Caine has 30 min cat naps in the day and has now started going for 5 hour from 11pm till 4am. He packs in the feeds during the day though and then every night now he knows when big bottle comes out (6oz) he has that then bed. He then wakes up about 4am and then 6 or 7am for feeds :D

idk but Amelie has about the same napwise as simeon (minus the 11am nap, she just has 2 unless we're out and she sleeps on the move lol) and she wakes every 2-3 hours and wants a feed too.. pretty much exactly the same actually. Its exhausting isnt it :(?

Tabitha also wakes up in the night like this, if she stirs in the night and wakes up she's too lazy to put herself back to sleep so demands a feed and falls back to sleep after a few sucks.
Sometimes she wakes up other nights she doesnt, it really helped when she was fed more at night, like Ryder suggested.
Though one suggestion, Tabitha used to sleep through and then started teething at about 4 months and started waking up for a feed cos her teeth were hurting?? I know that if she's got a cold or feeling off she'll wake up more now..

Thank you, it is exhausting, I am constantly tired at the moment and I don't like it as it gets to 4pm and I just can't interact with Simeon as much as I'd like as I am too tired to.

I did as recommended yesterday and he napped less... and he did seem to have a better pattern. He woke at 2am as usual but he just wanted me to put his dummy in, then at 4am for a small feed, then 6.30am.

Today, Simeon has had quite a few naps here and there as we went to the seaside and it was hot, but he still hasn't had as much as he usually does, he has had a 6oz feed before bed, so I am hoping that I see even more of an improvement tonight - we'll see.

I think he is teething more lately too so that could be another reason - he is such a good baby - I just hope he settles into a proper sleep routine soon.

Thanks again for all your advice and help. x

Thanks Ryder, I will definately try to cut down on his naps. I will cut out the morning nap and cut down on the afternoon nap... if he lets me lol. i would leave his morning nap hon and try cutting the 3rd one of the day he is having x

Fred has a morning nap 30-45mins and 1 nap either at lunch or just after lunch of about 1-2hours xx he has slept through from about 3 months tho we do have the odd night when he wakes for feeds, i do think alot is down to the individual baby!

and see if giving him some breckie helps xxx

Julian didn't sleep completely through til a year and a half when he weaned himself. but at that point it was only one nightly feed so wasn't too bad.

Hi i wouldn't listen to what people about him not sleeping through the night because he is BF my LO has slept right through the night from being 2 weeks old and he was totally BF then he slept from 11pm until 6pm until he was 7-8 weeks old then he started sleeping 8-6 now he goes a straight 12-13 hours from 7:30pm until 7-9am ish and has a 9oz bottle of formula for bed.

He also has around 4 hours of sleep during the day for his naps he is very strange and sleeps 10 mins here and there then an hour sometimes 2. :)

Keep up the hard work hun it will pay off for you
