Hi,

I found out I was pregnant on 13th July and was ecstatic about the news as me and partner have been trying for a baby for 4 years nearly. I have had one previous miscarriage 6 months ago at a very early stage that just seemed like I had gotten my period late, so this time I was sent for an early scan at about 5 weeks which was on the 20th July ( I don't know my exact conception date) the scan showed nothing at all and I was told that they will need to draw some blood for HCG testing and that it may be too early to be able to see anything on the scan.

I got my results later that day and they were 480 and my progesterone levels were 31. They told me that they would need me to come back again a few days later but as it was a weekend and they were closed I didn't make it back until 24th July - they repeated the HCG test and I got the results later on that day they were 790 HCG - I was told that they were not doubling as they should be but not to panic at the moment as they are slowly rising ( inside I couldnt help but panic and took to the internet 8 hours a day trying to find answers) I started spotting dark brown blood after getting home from the hospital and began to get very emotional and upset, I drove myself crazy for 2 days infact.

On the 26th July i went back to the hospital for a 3rd HCG test, I got the results the same day they were 912 and still rising slowly but not doubling! I was told that i may well have an impending miscarriage and to stay off my feet as much as possible. I had all of the normal first trimester pregnancy symptoms, my belly was bloated, I had headaches, nausea, felt sick and I also had the pregnancy line below my belly button going down to my pelvic area.

Later that evening I started to bleed more heavy and the brown blood changed colour to red blood, I started getting contraction like feelings and the bleeding and the pain became worse and worse. A couple of hours in I went to the toilet and passed a large clot embryo substance and just knew that was my baby. I called the Early Pregnancy Unit and told them what was happening and they said that it sounds like a miscarriage and for me to come to the hospital for a scan the next day.

I went for a scan and was told that they couldn't see anything at all on the scan once again and that I have fluid and a collapsed cyst but no sign of the baby. The Dr told me that what I had seen was more than likely the embryo and that i should get plenty of bed rest and do a pregnancy test in a weeks time to check that my levels have gone down enough and that I get a not pregnant result. I bled quite heavy for 3 days and then the red blood went and i started to get brown blood which slowly faded to brown discharge as the days went by.

After 9 days i decided it was time to do a pregnancy test as my pregnancy symptoms had more or less gone ( I only had headaches and nausea) To my shock the clearblue digital test said pregnant 2-3 weeks (which was the highest reading I had during my pregnancy when I had levels of 912 HCG) I was shocked and called the hospital and they arranged for me to come in and have another HCG test the next day.

I went to the hospital on the 6th August and did a pregnancy test which came up with an extremely dark line (the darkest it had shown at the hospital ever) I also did another HCG test, after speaking to the Dr he told me that he was worried I was experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and that they can potentially be very dangerous so I left the hospital disheartened and terrified.

I got my results later that day they were 852 HCG and only 4 progesterone. My HCG levels hadn't dropped much at all, but my progesterone had become considerably low. I asked that they scan me as I wanted to make sure that I wasn't having an ectopic pregnancy but the nurse on the phone said that they wouldn't scan me and that I would have to come back in again a week later to have another HCG test to check that levels have dropped more. This angered me as I was told by the doctor himself that i may be having an ectopic pregnancy and that i can be life threatening and can also result in fertility problems. I called the Early Pregnancy Unit several times arguing with them that they need to take the correct measures to make make sure that my health is not at risk.

After hours of arguing I managed to get them to agree to book me in for a scan for this Thursday 9th August. The last thing I needed was the doctor telling me that I have an impending miscarriage and that she doesn't think I have an ectopic but she will check in a week. I explained to her once again that i had already miscarried but she wasn't taking me seriously at all saying that my levels are still high because i am going to miscarry. The only way i managed to get them to agree to give me a date for s can was by saying to the Dr are you so sure that i am not having an ectopic pregnancy that you are willing to take full responsibility, she replied no and that she wouldn't be held responsible.

The whole experience has been a nightmare for me. I will attend the scan this Thursday to find out what is going on hopefully, however I wouldn't hold my breath as they may well see nothing on the scan and keep sending me for HCG tests every week to check my levels. I have also found out that at the Early Pregnancy Unit near where i live the Doctors are not qualified Gynae doctors and they are training to be Gynae doctors. At the end of the day if you feel like thay are holding back and not answering your questions you need to push them into a corner so that you get the answers and the actions that is needed to secure that your health is being taken care of!

I truly feel for anyone out there that is currently having HCG tests and their levels are not doubling, it is a highly traumatic experience at a very crucial time. I will recommend not to drive yourself as crazy as i did by sitting on the computer all day every day as even though it can be reassuring it can also stress you and worry you at the same time. Looking for answers is fine if conducted in moderation.

I am popping over from the 2nd trimster..i too had slow rising HCg..as well as early spotting and bleeding at 8 weeks and spotting off and on until at 13 Weeks. As for the ultrasound are they just going in to check your tubes to make sure they are clear? The reason I ask is because they can't usually see anything in the uterus until your HCG reaches 2000. I didnt show anything until I was about 5 weeks pregnant due to slow rising HCG. However, I am now 17 weeks and everything seems to be going fine. Dont lose hope just yet..i hope you have a positive outcome. :hugs:

Lisac, i'm so sorry you're going through this. I went through almost the exact same thing last year. The doctors were so sure I had miscarried. My HCGs climbed but didn't double, and i experienced spotting which then turned to bleeding, and i passed some gray matter, which i thought was fetal tissue. The day I passed it, i was in such terrible pain that i went to the dr and the nurse gave me 2 ibuprofen, told me i was miscarrying, and sent me on my merry way, with no follow up appointment or scan or anything. Turns out it WAS ectopic, and my tube ruptured 3 weeks later, and I am STILL paying for the surgery to have it removed. It was an awful experience and I'm so sorry you have to go through something so similar. You are absolutely right to STAY ON THEM until they can prove to you what is actually going on. I trusted my doctors when i shouldn't have and I am the one that paid for it. I am not saying any of this to scare you and I truly hope everything works out better for you than it did for me. On the bright side, there is still hope to conceive after ectopic. I am expecting twins after having one of my tubes removed.

Hi ltbustle,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Firstly I would like to say that I am very sorry that you have suffered a similar thing to me and that the Doctors had let you down too. The important thing is that you are healthy now and expecting twins!! :happydance:

It is really inspiring to hear that even though you have had an Ectopic in the past you are still able to have children. I have read all kinds of horror stories on the internet so that has put my mind at ease.

I will go for my scan tomorrow and I am hoping that they can confirm that i didn't have an ectopic pregnancy. It is suspected that I may have as I am still getting brown stuff and my HCG's have fallen so slowly in a week and 6 days. The last time they scanned me they said they found nothing but it may have been to early to see anything.

I will keep you updated tomorrow. I wish you all the best :hugs:

Hi Native_gurl,

At my scan today I was told that I am having a possible Ectopic pregnancy, however they will not be able to fully confirm this unless they perform laparoscopy surgery. I was told that more than likely it is the case but they cannot be 100% sure. I was given 2 options 1) methotrexate - an injection that should get rid of the remains of the pregnancy 85% successful or 2) laparoscopy - key hole surgery with a camera to have a look and if it is an ectopic pregnancy they will remove it and also remove one of my fallopian tubes, which would make it harder for me to conceive naturally although not entirely rule it out.

As I was unhappy with the level of service I have previously been receiving I decided to get a referral letter from the consultant and get a second opinion from a senior consultant at another hospital who specialises in my current condition.

I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon to meet with the senior consultant at another hospital and I'll go from there I guess.

I will keep you updated.

Thank you for caring and for thinking of me

:hugs:
