Hi ladies

Expecting next month and just wanted to hear what you thought was the best formula milk on the market? I'm not sure which one to start LO off on.

Midwife advised us to use aptamil because its the closest to breast milk

Aptamil....Used with DS2 7 years ago & using with my Daughter now

Never had any problems

I'm using sma gold right now but LO seems to be very windy and her poos are getting really firm and uncomfortable for her. Im thinking of changing

MWs/HVs are paid to say aptamil is closest to breastmilk, which is rather outrageous and should be stopped. I'm not anti-FF but anti unethical marketing practices. All the formulas on the market have to meet stringent standards, no one is better or closer to BM than any other, its just whatever works for you and your baby.

SMA didn't suit Aliyah at all.
Aptamil is great x

SMA has always been great for my little man, and when the yellow wasn't doing much for him, I changed him to SMA hungry baby, and at almost 1 it still fills him up x

I use Cow and Gate as it is the cheapest. I too have heard that Aptimal is the closest to breastmilk, but i figure that with food regulations, the other brands must be okay too or they would be banned. I only make one bottle a day anyway.

we started on cow and gate and it really didnt agree with LO so we started on amptimal and had no bother.

We use sma follow on milk.

Note the 3rd paragraph where it states that closest to breasmilk must be removed from aptamil packaging as its untrue. (just for information.)

VERY untrue !

im a midwife and midwives are told that that they should never specifically recommend a brand of milk to a mum , of course midwives have their own expierience with the uses of milk with their own babies etc which they may pass over .

i mix fed alex and will be mix feeding my next little one when he comes along , if u look at the actual ingredients on the different formulas u will see that there is very little difference.

infact cow and gate and aptimil even have the same corrospondance address on the boxes.

i used both cow and gate and aptimil when i mix fed alex , but my other friends (also midwives) used sma and farleys/heinz

it is the same as most things and is very much a personal choice none of which is a wrong choice, alot of people tend to use what their friends or relatives have used before which goes for things like the make of bottle etc

xxx :flower: xxx

I used SMA gold 9yrs ago and also started LO on it. Had to change to SMA High Energy, but still..... SMA!!!
All babies are different though xxx

All formulas have to have the same nutrients by law, so one is not better than the other in terms of nutrition. However, they do all have different tastes and consistencies and blends of prebiotics and babies can show a preference or get on better with one brand over another because of this. Cow and Gate and Aptamil are not the same product but the only difference is that they both have a different blend of prebiotics in them. I have always got on really well with Aptamil and would recommend it for that. Whilst I do agree Aptamil has been well marketed, that doesn't stop it being a good formula. My friend who is a SCBU nurse says they use Aptamil as a first choice if a parent doesn't express a preference because they have found it to be the formula that causes babies less problems as it's very light and easily digested. But it is a matter of personal choice and preference I think - some babies get on better with one brand rather than another.

rainbow; there is research that shows that midwives and health visitors are given financial incentives such as £1000 grants and the chance to win vouchers for high street stores, to promote this formula and 'sister' products from cow and gate as being the best in terms of health claims; you may not have personally experienced this but it has been highlighted by several campaign groups and I am sure if untrue aptamil or more specifically their parent group danone; would have sued them. Until very recently advertising; including false claims about being closest to breastmilk were also allowed to be placed in midwifery journals in this country. Many midwives/health visitors do tell mums to use a specific formula; and do make false claims that such and such formula (and usually aptamil) is closest to breastmilk. Also, at least in this area and I have heard a shortage of midwives due to retirement is a problem across the board; most midwives are of an older generation; their children are in their late teens or even older; so the formulation of any formula will have changed dramatically since they had their child.

Aptamil and Cow and gate are made by the same company. If you ever phone the number they ask you which you are calling about.

Probably the same concept as Lexus and Toyota lol

SMA clogged my first son up and we had a very tough first 4 weeks, i changed to SMA hungry baby thinking he was hungry and made it even worse. Changed to Aptamil when i realised it was actually tummy ache and he was a totally different baby within a few days.
