Sorry if I sound like a weirdo but I really need to ask!
For a good few weeks now I LOVE the smell of washing powder and the sniff the clothes that come fresh out of the washing machine before putting them in the dryer (LOL)
Ok so recently I need more than just the smell so I literally just 'snort' a few of the tiny grains.. am I really weird or will it harm baby?

well once off accident no, hardly think you will get rolling up tenner to do more, That probably wouldn't be good. I also had this addiction, that and fabric softner. I would smell wet washing all the time and remember chewing on a wet face cloth just out of washing machine. It was my cocaine too.

Hi I'm Willo and I am a Washing Powder addict. It has been maybe an hour since my last sniff....
I have not snorted any but have found lots of things that need washing and will be waiting for the washing machine to finish on tenderhooks. I cannot wait to take them out and smell them before they get hung out to dry.
I also take trips to my local tesco just to walk down the cleaning aisle and get a right lung full.
We have a scented ecoegg too and I just go out to the kitchen to sniff that and the box of washing powder when I think no one will notice. Been caught loads though and family just think it's funny.

I can't stop chewing on my sons bath sponge when it has his baby wash stuff on it- I have to buy him a new sponge twice a week :-/

I'm hoping it will stop once baby arrives because it's very addictive..... I just keep on chewing on it! I have no idea why?? But i wash my mouth out after I have done so I don't swallow any. Instead of snorting maybe try chewing wet washing lol

I find this fascinating, though I cannot relate. I am more likely to be averse to smells. Even nice smells seem too strong for me and almost make me feel sick. I do like sniffing my toddler's head, but that's probably just a maternal thing.

Amazing what hormones will make us do.... Lovemybaby--at least you don't have Pica, where you want to eat chalk and dust and dirt!!!

I can't stop smelling bleach :/ we have this surface spray that's bleach and eucalyptus lol and I just love the smell.. Also washing powder too. Haven't snorted it though lol xD

I can't say I am addicted to snorting the stuff lol, but I do like the smell! My nose has been a lot more sensitive whilst pregnant, I notice smells an awful lot more!

YES!!! Not so much the snorting, but the addicted to sniffing cleaning products, bath/shower products or washing products, that is totally me! I've been doing loads of washes the last week and for me the best smell is fabric softener; I can't get enough. I accidentally spilled some on my hand and instead of washing it off I kept smelling my hand every few minutes till the smell faded. My new shower gel has got this strong delicious smell and I can't get out the shower now. I remember this from last time, but the urge is stronger this time.

I've heard about the chewing on a bath sponge thing before, but have never felt the urge myself. It's a good thing I moved on from sponges to flannels with my son, as I would be tempted to try and take a nibble to see what it was like :haha:

LOL glad im not alone although im probably alone in the 'snorting' bit!
Its so frustrating I wait by the washing machine aswell just to smell the clothes, nearly had a fit today when my mum done the cycle twice without telling me! Thats MY job until this addiction stops haha! Ong speaking of it all makes me wana go downstairs and have a sniff.. be right back ;)

My mum had this smelling washing/powder also chewing a face cloth when she was pregnant with me and now I have the same addiction even not being pregnant I love smelling the washing and going to asda and smell all the washing powder and comforts I sometimes just want to eat it but im not that addicted to it when I'm pregnant it's strange x

I don't sniff washing powder but I do sniff chalk. There's a blackboard duster in work which I just sort bang and take a whiff of the resulting dust....I probably do it about 10 times a day....it's non toxic but I can't imagine it's good for my lungs!

I would ask what's in your washing powder and all these other smells...if it's made of synthetic chemicals, sniffing/snorting it probably isn't good for you, or your baby. A lot of household products seem benign, but are a poisonous cauldron of toxic laboratory crafted chemicals. Sorry to be the party pooper, but I would just urge caution. :-)

Thankyou! Yes I really want to know if its harmful because then I will just stop doing it no matter how bad the craving gets! It happened in my last pregnancy aswell and sometimes would make me want to cry the craving was so bad just sniffing it didnt satisfy my needs. Weird I know. Will defo be asking the midwife next time I see her

I'd talk to your doctor about this. Maybe you're lacking a nutrient. It's not safe to snort chemicals, even while you're not pregnant. Maybe your doctor/midwife can give you some support. If you're going to keep snorting, I'd call them right away, tbh.

I dont snort like how you do drugs I basically just put the tiniest amount ever on the edge of a cup and snort that. So like a few of those tiny grains. I think I'll just stop doing it as im not sure if irs harmful or not and I wont be seeing my midwife for another 4 weeks yet

Im sure that snorting it is not going to do u any good no matter how small an amount it is! Tbh i kno smells can be addictive, im loving rubber smells and plastic smells, but like a pp said, just the vapours from the products are going to be pretty toxic so id try and at least cut down!

Linypops I keep wanting to eat sand and crushed chalk and brick dust :haha:

Havent indulged yet but its getting stronger to the point where I start to feel sick, had it with my last pregnancy too which was helped by going to majorca on holiday and I sat on the beach eating sand

Problem is this time I'm no where near a beach although I have seriously considered scrapping some of the cement stuff from between the bricks of my house.... Issuesss!

If you can't stop yourself though from snorting--even a few grains, then please call your midwife now to get some advice, or like I said, maybe you are lacking some nutrients or something like that, and need blood tests run.

Can't you call your midwife though to discuss this? I'm in the US so I had OB's with my pregnancies, but I was always able to call to ask a question if I needed to. Please give her a call hon.

Princess - I hadn't even considered moving onto the harder stuff like concrete. I'm off work now, so no chalk, and it's hard...I make do with smelling sponges and the like...It's something to do with the dryness?

I've become so addicted to the smell of Badedas bath gelee that I spent weeks tracking down a source of the 'old' stuff (Unilever took over production a few years ago and their formula smells horrible!) - I finally found someone who has a bunch of old stock and am ashamed to say I have now spent about £100 on bottles of it. I have a huge stash under my sink, because I'm terrified I will run out. I bathe with it every day and lie there eating the bubbles, and occasionally lick the top of the bottle to get a taste of it neat.

I wish I could stop lol. On the plus side, though, midwives apparently recommend it for healing stitches after birth!

Another recent obsession is pine toilet cleaner from Morrisons. There's a big bottle of it next to our toilet, so every time I'm in there (which is often with this baby sitting on my bladder), I spend a few minutes inhaling that. Can't be good, but it's so hard not to do it. :( I'm always on the lookout for new things to smell lol. Anything piney or foresty seems to be doing it for me!
