Just had to share this, as I am so relieved.

Some of you may remember I have been having problems with Bfing. I had mastitis when Jess was 2 weeks old in my left breast. I was given antibiotics, which lead to me having thrush in the milk ducts.

I had 4 courses of anti fungal treatment, that didn't work. I was then in a situation where the breastfeeding councilor was telling me I needed more anti fungal tablets, and the Doctors wouldn't prescribe them.

Two Dr's told me to 'grin an bare it' or give up:nope:

Anyway, I went back to the Doctor for the umpteenth time, and demanded a proper diagnosis ( very brave for me :haha:). She told me to give in a milk sample to be analysis.

Well, it took a whole week for the results, but they came back showing that I had staph aureus bacteria in my milk. I was prescribed antibiotics, and five days later I am pain free:happydance:

I think what had happened was that I had thrush after the mastitis, which cleared up with the tablets, but thrush causes your nipples to be very fragile and open (I had blisters on my nipple which burst on several occasions -ouch!), and the staph aureus infection got in to the milk ducts.

So, after cracked nipples for the two weeks after LO was born, mastitis, thrush, and infection, I am now feeding her for the first time in 15 weeks and it doesn't hurt:happydance:

So for anyone who might have symptoms of thrush (pain when latching on, during the feed, and for up to 2hrs after) that don't clear up with anti fungal medication, ask for them to test your milk. Don't rely on your doctor to know much about breast feeding problems - in my experience they don't:dohh:

I am so, so happy I didn't give up.

Well done you!! Thrush can be a long hard battle (like you I had it for several weeks), and most doctors don't have a clue that it even exists in the breasts, never mind how painful it can be!!

Here's to a pain-free, successful BFing journey for both of us :)

Thank you. I just feel so pleased that it's sorted. Never thought I'd get to this point.
Glad you came through it too x

What an amazingly dedicated, determined mummy Jessica has! Well done you, thats great! :happydance:

Well done you for keeping up with it, I am not sure if I would have done going through all that pain. You must just feel so happy and amazing feeding her with no pain, you get to enjoy nursing all over again.

Thanks, my mum suffers from systemic thrush generally and she said sometimes thrush symptoms can be casued by a bacteria instead but she couldn't remember the name of it xx

Just read ur post dizzymum and u've been through so much in these early weeks u deserve a big massive well done for keeping going. Hope ur onward journey is painfree your a trooper. Good on u too for standing up to ur doctor.

Thank you. I am so enjoying feed times now. For so long I often felt sick at the thought of her latching on, and was in tears in between feeds as the pain was unbearable sometimes. I'm loving it now, can't believe it doesn't hurt anymore:happydance:

Woo hoo! Yay for you, well done. Every time I feed my baby and I see the look of bliss on his little face, his eyes closing with contentedness, I am so glad that I kept going and still keep on going with bf'ing right through the tough times. Right now I have a very painful blocked duct that keeps blocking up after me taking an hour to unblock it, but I will keep going on!!

Hope you can unblock it soon, sounds painful.:hugs:

I love the look on my LOs face too - she just looks so comfy, as if there is no place on earth she would rather be - so, so special x

Well done, so happy for you!

I am feeding for the first time without pain/medication too since Pearette was born. I had sore damaged nipples and then a long battle with thrush too. Just hope it stays away.

:flower:

Oh my, I know this is an ancient thread, but I did a search on staph in breast milk and came across this. This gives me hope, I am being treated for thrush with minimal relief, but got my milk cultures back yesterday and I do have a staph infection, so headed back to see the doctor today, who already said yesterday she's putting me on Keflex for it. Oh, praying now this works and the pain stops!!
