Just had to share this, as I am so relieved.
Some of you may remember I have been having problems with Bfing. I had mastitis when Jess was 2 weeks old in my left breast. I was given antibiotics, which lead to me having thrush in the milk ducts.
I had 4 courses of anti fungal treatment, that didn't work. I was then in a situation where the breastfeeding councilor was telling me I needed more anti fungal tablets, and the Doctors wouldn't prescribe them.
Two Dr's told me to 'grin an bare it' or give up
Anyway, I went back to the Doctor for the umpteenth time, and demanded a proper diagnosis ( very brave for me ). She told me to give in a milk sample to be analysis.
Well, it took a whole week for the results, but they came back showing that I had staph aureus bacteria in my milk. I was prescribed antibiotics, and five days later I am pain free
I think what had happened was that I had thrush after the mastitis, which cleared up with the tablets, but thrush causes your nipples to be very fragile and open (I had blisters on my nipple which burst on several occasions -ouch!), and the staph aureus infection got in to the milk ducts.
So, after cracked nipples for the two weeks after LO was born, mastitis, thrush, and infection, I am now feeding her for the first time in 15 weeks and it doesn't hurt
So for anyone who might have symptoms of thrush (pain when latching on, during the feed, and for up to 2hrs after) that don't clear up with anti fungal medication, ask for them to test your milk. Don't rely on your doctor to know much about breast feeding problems - in my experience they don't
I am so, so happy I didn't give up.
