Hi everyone.

Just bee on the phone to HMRC and apparently all we are entitled to is £21.00 a week child tax credit, my partner earns too much to claim working tax credit. Can someone tell me is that ALL we are going to get? Is there nothing else I can claim for? Im a student and so only have a part time job- my maternity is only £88 a week so I was hoping we would be able to claim a little more than 21.00 a week. My bf's salary has gone down for 25k to 19k this year. The only reason I presumed we would be entitled to a little more is because a couple we know claim £148 WTC and CTC a week plus £20 child benefit a week- and they both have full time jobs- i just dont get it! :nope:

They prob pay for childcare hun.. that's what WTC is usually for :( me and OH get £415ish a month but Amelies fees are £467 so we pay out £50 for her nursery and we don't get any CTC. £20 a week is better than nothing

Yeah i guess- i just dont see how our friends get £168 a week when they both work full time. Will I be able to claim child benefit aswel as child tax credit? That will take it upto £41 a week which would help alot. x

Just had a thought... when she asked how much we earned I told her the amount before tax- is that right? OH earns 19k before tax. Ah im so gutted lol.x

Do the couple you know work full time and have a child in day care?

You will get CTC and CB each week, so from what they have quoted you that is £41 a week.

Unfortunately as you are claiming as a couple and his income is above the lower income threshold this is all you are entitled too.

Go on to www.entitledto.com and put in your figures and see if that gives you the same figure.

Yeah their baby has a child minder for 2 days a week. Im guessing some of that money is towards that then. Never thought of that x

Yeah WTC normally pays for childcare, which will be why they get so much.

I just filled out the entitled to web form and it told me I'd be getting £21 a week too (+ £20 CB).

But I entered £126 childcare costs per week as a rough guide. So why don't I get any help with that? We certainly don't earn millions... :(

yer you will get 20 child benifit everybody is entitled to that, just a heads up to if you didnt know you should also be entitled to 190 healthy eating grant im pretty sure any1 gets that. but you probably wont get anything else hun. as urs and oh earnings together amount to more then what they class as sufficient enough to live on. and theres alot more people who get less then that each year and are on the most benifits thry can get xxx

His wage doesnt go in my pocket though at the end of the day lol. I earn roughly about 5grand a year which is nothing. It may say he gets 19k on paper but in reality he doesnt- he comes home with around 1200 every month but 800+ of that goes on our rent and bills. The system basically encourages you to raise a child as a single parent.. daft!

it may not nesserily go in your pocket but they judge by your household really....i mean think about it. if he gets say 1200 in and 800 goes out ur left with 400 plus what ever u get in regards to maternity allowance which didnt u say was 80 odd? plus you will have 40 odd a week in benifits so thats like 880 a month so averaging out at about 220 a week now i no i could defo live of that with 2 kids!...most people on beinifts then get say their house paid etc yer so al they have to fork out for is bills say 200 a month and wud get 66 tax credit and 20 child benifit and 64 income support then say which totals to 150 odd a week so 600 a month and they have to take bills out of that so are still living of far less then what you would be with low benifit help so really its not encouraging anybody to a single parent wen clearly you get 120 more a week being with a partner lol xx

yeah i get around 80 a week which goes on food and petrol. he pays the bills and rent. i know im lucky to have someone that earns a good enough wage so that we dont have to live off benefits, and i've got some good career opertunties coming my way this summer when i have finished uni but i just thought we might get a bit more- everyone i know who had kids seems to get ALOT more than this and they all have full time jobs. ah well im over it :)

I know it can be be frustrating when others get more... But really you should be happy with getting anything at all... There are some countries who don't get diddly squat :(

We are lucky really!

As others have said if they both work full time I suspect it will be for childcare which'll then go straight back out. If you return to work you will prob be able to claim something dependent on the hours you need care for. TBH your other half earns ok in the eyes of the benefits office I suspect.

thing is they dont take into account you pay say £800 pcm on rent for a 2 or 3bed house they dont care TBH they will look at cheap 2/3 bed house and think thats how much you pay.. They wont take into account house Insurence, petrol, car In, ect you could earn £2,000 a month and spent £1,500 on just rent and have £500 left to pay everything else in your house hold but in there eyes you would not need a £1,500 pcm house

I do think they should take more things into Con but then we all live to our means and if we new we would get more money having a better house everyone would.

It sucks when you see people getting more but you get more income from wages then some people and other get more for childcare

We get quite a bit of CTC and WTC but Oh works ona 14K job so under the £15,050 for 2009 **i think thats what it way anyway**

:hugs:

WTC & CTC are based on your income (after tax)
You should fill in a proper claim.
If you want to know how it's all calculated, look here:

I totally agree! Im in a similar situation to you, we dont get much either as we earn too much (apparently)! Rent & bills take up all our money :(

Think its because you chose what area/house/flat to rent, and you chose to have a car, internet, sky TV etc etc

I thought we got wtc if both parents work and the mum works more than 16hrs a week. As the wtc goes on nursery? Isnt that correct
