I've self-diagnosed myself with SPD. I didn't know what it was before... but I searched for my symptoms & it is textbook SPD. Hurts to walk more than around the house. Going up and down stairs... moving around in bed. Even just lifting one leg in bed can be painful on my vaginal muscle area. It is something I noticed during my first pregnancy... but much later (30+ weeks). I didn't think anything of it during that pregnancy because it was so new to me and I figured a certain amount of discomfort was normal. But now that it has started up so much earlier I decided I had to figure out what was going on.

Anyone else with this? How early did it start for you? I'd say it became very noticeable around 18 weeks this time.

Does it increase risk for early labor? What do you think the doctor will say to me? I don't have an appointment until May 8th.

*raises hand*

Didn't have it until 32+ weeks with my first, but it was more on the outside of my hip... started last week this time and I can't do anything... I made the mistake of kneeling down to give my son a hug last night and had to crawl to the stairs so I could stand up again... Seeing my OB for the first time on Monday so I'm going to see if she has any recommendations... my guess is it'll be physio to prevent it from getting worse :(

No no risk of preterm labour with it, but if it was very bad you may need to think about positions during labour as it could be painful for you! It's a massive pain (no pn intended) but management is all that can be done- paracetamol, a sacro iliac belt perhaps (or any pregnancy support belt to take the weight off your pelvis) I had a friend who had to use crutches because of it. You may need physio not just now but afterwards- it can carry on being painful if you don't treat it properly, it's not quite as simple as just resolving itself instantly, so defnitely talk to someone about it.

I had the same thing. It was really painful. I found that I could be fine and active one minute and then the pain came afterwards. The inflammation of my ligaments was the pain. My scandinavian friend told me to use this maternity slide sheet. It was brilliant and meant I could move from one side to the other really easily!!! You should try it, it is better than any of the maternity pillows out there!!!. I found a maternity slide sheet through google called hooglii

I developed SPD around 20 weeks or so when I was pregnant. It was exactly how you describe. I have joint hypermobility so I sorta expected it would eventually get me since my joints are already somewhat unstable (and all that relaxin doesn't help any!). What worked for me was seeing an osteopath who found a misalignment in my pelvis and was able to correct that. I had two appts with her and then I also started swimming 3 times a week. I think the combination of these two is what really helped. It almost completely went away after my second osteo appt and the week I started swimming. It's unpleasant, but it won't have any effect on your pregnancy (other than just making you feel extra miserable!). I had a healthy, normal pregnancy and a great home birth and didn't even need any pain relief. Mine didn't bother me at all during birth, but if it does, upright positions (not on your back) are best. I did lots of squatting and gave birth kneeling on all fours. But try not to stress too much. It's awful and painful, but it can be treated and you can feel like yourself again.

Physiotherapy and osteopathy can help stop it from progressing. Nothing can make it go but delivering your baby. There's no concern with early labour, but you need to be able to decide on birthing positions. So, epidurals aren't a good idea since you wouldn't be able to feel when a position became too painful. They actually think it can speed labour up, as things are so relaxed.

I can totally relate! Here is an interesting article...
