As others have said, it seems to be mostly a genetics thing. Every female in my family had to deal with stretch marks during their pregnancies, and I'm no different. I think the main thing you can do to prevent getting them too badly, is to make sure that you don't gain a lot of weight all at once. My worst stretch marks came around the times when I had unnecessarily large "growth spurts".
I do still use some cream I bought from a maternity store, just in case it somehow helps. But I really don't think it does.
