Hi Everyone,

I just had my first IVF consultation this morning and was surprised to find out how low some of the conception stats are....I've been doing clomid and IUI for the last 2 months and the dr told me that it is a waste of time and money. He said that clomid with IUI has only 7% success rate, vs. IVF which is around 60%! He suggested trying more potent fertility meds with IUI first which may increase the success rate to 30%. He asked me if I want to go straight to IVF...or try the IUI with stronger meds...i don't know what to do? anyone in the same boat?

To be honest most clinics will only give a 7 to 10% chance of success with IUI which confused me, since a natural cycle of TTC is supposedly 20%. With IVF it varies greatly. 60% for IVF is ridiculously good compared to our hospital which has a 34% success rate and claims to be 'very successful'. You're unlikely to get better than that.

What we were told, though, is to basically not take too much notice to the success rates. All clinics are competitive and have a different range of patients, for example those who claim to have a 75% success rate might take on 1000 women under 30 and those that only have a 50% success rate might have 5,000 patients ranging up to Age 40. It's all very subjective and cannot be accurately compared unless they have the same number of patients within the same age range.
