hey ladies, i'm hearing all these pregnancy 'superstitions' like "not allowed to keep babies items in the house, until she/he is here" etc etc! me and the OH are going to buy our pram tonight, even though i wanted to wait until i was viable at 24 weeks (i'm 21 + 1) but its on offer this week only with £200 knocked off - hence why we are going to get it, but i'm scared :( i feel like i'm 'tempting fate' for our little girlie - even though i've had a perfect pregnancy so far!!

anyway girls i just wanted to hear your opinions on all these superstitions and if you have heard any yourselves? thanx xxxxx

i've only ever been told not to keep the pram in the house, hence its at my godmothers until i need it.

not heard of anything else and as per my thread my house looks like an extension of mothercare! ask them if they will keep the pram at theirs.

I wouldnt worry about it hon, you are just an excited mother to be. I try not to pay mind to those...they get me down if I do haha, I have Caylees closet full of clothes and her sleeper right next to my bed already and Im only 22 weeks :) I saw just go for it and dont worry hon.

I am surrounded by superstition, it drives me loopy. Half of my family are Italian and some of the things I've been brought up with are amazing....here's a few examples for you;
1. Unlucky to build baby's cot until s/he has been born (this includes moses basket, crib etc)
2. Bad luck to have pram in the house, unless it is collapsed in a box and nowhere near where baby will sleep.
3. The end of baby's cot (ie where their feet go) must not face out the bedroom door as this will cause cotdeath (something to do with dead people being carried out the room feet first)
4. Your husband must not see your breasts if you're going to breastfeed as he will curse the milk
5. The mother must do nothing except feed baby until bleeding stops, or next pregnancy will be a miscarriage

Honestly, there are loads I could go on for ages, but they are all BOLLOCKS!!!!! I am seriously trying to push my lovely hubby into moving into a 5 bed house so I can get started on the nursery as we don't have room for one in our house, and I want to get the cot up and get it all ready, now!! I'd ignore it, and go for the bargain pram. If you really don't feel comfy having it in the house, store it somewhere else, but definately buy it!

I'm not supersitious at ALL..... thank god, cuz I'd drive myself nuts! LOL.....

I think my fave is the one about not keeping a stroller in the house till baby is born, they are all so funny!

xx

look.. I have said it once before in a thread on here and will say it again.. if its meant to be then its meant to be.. whether you have the baby items bought, in the house, or not!
Most of my baby BIG ITEMS are in the shed.. everything ese in the wardrobe.. thats only cos I aint started babies room yet.

Goodluck and welldone on your bargain hun. x

My MIL is the queen of superstitions/myths/folklore regarding every aspect of pregnancy:

having a girl will diminish the mother's beauty and make her age faster - as opposed to having boys.

Not buying anything baby related until at least 7 months to prevent loss of pregnancy.

the above two are her favourites where I am concerned - she repeats them til she is blue in the face. Drives me barmy!

In my culture, I haven't heard of the superstitions about getting the prams or cribs beforehand. I think it also depends on what you're comfortable with.

Here are some myths/superstitions I've encountered and that I also posted in my blog.

- Perhaps the most outrageous and craziest of them all comes from my mom. Basically, I should not look at ugly people so that my baby will be pretty! I swear, I laughed so hard when I heard it.

- Whatever you eat will indicate how your baby will look like. So, if you eat red fruits, your baby's cheeks will be red lol!

- Wear a red band to protect yourself from the evil eye (jealousy).

- No bathing for 10 days after delivery.

- If you deny a pregnant woman the food that she craves you will get a sty in your eye. Basically, what the prego woman wants, the prego woman gets!

My mom also said the same thing with my 1st pregnancy, I remembered I bought a travel system that was on sale in babyrus when I was just 13 weeks because it was on sale, when I bought them, my mom was pissing me off saying can't buy baby's item until I was 7 months, but...now my son is almost 4 years old and he is doing ok :) so no worry hon, nothing would happen if it not mean to happen. If you want to buy ur baby's stuff now when it's in a good price then do it.

I remember hearing on a sitcom called "Everybody Loves Raymond" that if a pregnant woman has a craving and doesn't eat that food, the baby will be born with a birthmark in the shape of the food. It was really hilarious on the show, though, because she said her son had one shaped like a pork chop.

I bought and assembled my baby's travel system yesterday. I found one on the Sears website that was just perfect, exactly what I wanted, so I ordered it and went down and picked it up. We brought it back and put it together, and tested how the base of the car seat would fit in the truck, etc. It's now in baby's future bedroom, where we also have another travel system that our friends gave to us, but it didn't have certain features that I wanted (even though I'm sure it cost A LOT more than ours did, and it was a nice gesture, it just wasn't right for me or what I wanted).

I always laughed at the "you shouldn't name your baby before he/she is born because it's bad luck" superstition...but how can you not?? I picked out a name the day I found out I was having a girl!!!
