Are any of you hiring one?
If so, where from?
Where is the cheapest you've found to hire one from?
Would it be better to just buy one?

I'm a little late on in hiring one now as I know starting time is usually 37 weeks. I really want as natural a labour as I can - in terms of avoiding epidurals etc.

Any advice would be great.

Check with your community midwives. they usually hire them out at a good price (I paid £6 and had to pay £20 deposit) it came with everything I needed like New pads et. And was allowed to take it from about 38 weeks until after I had the baby which was handy because I went very overdue so needed it for quite a few weeks without needing to pay extra.

I hated it though so when I was in labour it came off quicker than it went on!

Mothercare hire them from 38 - 42 weeks. I think it's about £20 to £30 for a four week hire.

My friend bought one when she had her daughter last year so I'm borrowing hers as she had a full pack of spare pads. She swears it got her through most of the first stage until she was about 8cm dilated during a back to back labour.

I reckoned it was worth a bash xx

I don't mind paying around £25 - £30, I think I would really kick myself if I didn't try it and ended up opting for a form of pain relief I didn't really wanna try.

My hospital used to hire them out but the midwife who did my antenatal class said they don't do them anymore :(

I have looked online and am thinking of getting the Elle one from this website;

I can't do it until my next pay comes in on Monday but they'll consider it a priority and send it the same day :)

I bought a mama tens machine brand new from eBay! Won a bid. They have 5* ratings! Xx

That's the one my friend has lent me knk. She said it was great because its got different speeds/levels so you can turn it up as the contractions get more intense xx

Ps she said to put it on as soon as I feel anything so the pain receptors get a chance to react xx

Hiya

I was just looking at this this morning and found this website:

https://www.babytens.net/

Cheaper than Boots and Mothercare!

i've just bought this, bargain!
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000QG79DO/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
i borrowed this one last time and it was amazing, was going to get one on ebay and then resell it but this is about the same price that they are going for anyway

I bought that one coz all iv seen are good reviews! And I'm being induced so I want to try it!

I've got the Elle TENS and highly recommend it. It got me to 10cm in my first labour at home with no other pain relief and I only got up to about strength 7 in the settings:haha: My sister also used it for both her labours; the first one being 3 days of slow back to back labour at home until going to the birth centre at about 5cm at which point she also had G&A, and the second time from start of labour to pushing with another back to back baby with no other pain relief, so it obviously worked for us.

I looked at hiring one, but because we were planning on having more than one child, it made more sense to buy one, and I'm glad I got it while in the UK, where I paid about £50 for it with a discount code, whereas here they cost about £140:saywhat:

I want more children in future and I've read they work for post labour pains too.. So now im considering buying one lol

What exactly does a tens machine do?

You put the pads on specific places on your back - they stimulate the nerves which is supposed to mask the pain sensations. Some women swear by them, some think they are useless. I'm willing to give it a go.

I'm hiring mine from my midwives - its a £10 donation, and you get given it from 37/38 weeks. I'm looking forward to getting it... I'm sure DH and I will have a play with it!!

Thanks for the link I will look into that as I wanted to get one. :D

Not sure about for post labour pain hun... personally, i cant really remember post labour pains being bad?! maybe i was just lucky but the maternity tens are FAR too strong to use as a normal tens.
I got very sweaty having Adrian (it was August) and one of the pads kept slipping off, i picked it up forgetting to turn down the power and it flippin' hurt my fingers!! yet at that power i could barely feel it on my back

One thing to note, remember to turn off the 'boost' between contractions! :haha:

I hired mine from boots after driving round for hours trying to find one! I'm not sure if mine helped or not. I have nothing to compare it too as I have only had one baby. I did find it a bit annoying at times. Not sure if I will use one again at the moment x

I've been lent one by a friend. Just bought some replacement pads for it for about £3.50 on Amazon. I've tried it out for my back pain on the lowest setting and it really helped. I second that the labour ones are strong, I turned it up a bit high the first time I used it and it gave me a bit of a shock!

I would have probably bought one myself if I couldn't borrow one, £30 is a small price to pay if it helps you to get the birth you want. Even if you still have to go down the epi / CS routes, at least you know you tried!
