Hello girls

I just had a scary experience at Boots. I am quite a bad eczema sufferer and have been using Eumovate topical topical steroid (sparingly) throughout pregnancy. Today they would not sell me it in Boots as apparently you are not supposed to use it in pregnancy. Now I am absolutely terrified as I have been using it until now. Will it have harmed the baby, and why / how? I had no idea I wasn't supposed to use it and am so upset as I don't drink, eat runny egg or do anything I know to be harmful. Gutted, help!!

xx

I got Emovate from my GP during second tri. He said it was safe to use about 3 days in a row, and then I'd have to stop for a couple of days, and if it hadn't gone away use it again for 3 days. So I think you and baby should be alright.

My friend is a pharamsist and says usually medicines are labelled unsafe as they haven't been tested extensively on pregnant women.

If it's any consolation, I was on a drug through most of my pregnancy prescribed by the doctor that said all over it 'DO NOT TAKE IF PREGNANT!'

Don't worry, these things are generally a case of being extra cautious anyway. I had a prescription steroid cream for a rare skin condition before I was pregnant, I used it for flare ups only not daily and when I got pregnant my gp advised it was ok to continue but try to use sparingly. I'm sure it'll be fine, talk to your gp if you're worried. If it was going to be a problem then I'm sure it would've been picked up before your 3rd trimester, if your check ups are showing normal heartbeat etc etc then I'm sure everything fine.

I would speak to your doctor about it. Maybe the risks are low?

Found this on netmums:

too have used elocon and eumovate when pregnant, dd is fine and ds is as far as I know (am 29 weeks pg)!

I have actually been told off by my GP for not using enough steroid cream to control my flares which are worse when pregnant, and she assures me that absorption is minimal.

I have decided that sensible use of steroid cream is probably preferable to nasty infected eczema and months of misery.

Hope that reasures you a little. x

Most say its quite mild.

Hey hun, I think they just say this to cover their backs. I went to one in Asda, and she wouldnt give me anything for my hands saying anything I had would poison my baby  My mum spoke to the allergy doctor at her work, who said steroid cream is fine for flare up's but to use this other cream for when there is no flare up to try and keep it under control.

Wow thanks so much girls, that is so reassuring. I will mention to my dr (next appointment i on Weds) but I feel much better and less panicky now. What would I do without you all? This forum is the greatest and has the greatest people - I would be an utter wreck without it!

All the best to all of you xx :hugs:

Most pharmacists are reluctant to give things over the counter to pregnant ladies, even if the doctor has suggested it, without a precription. I have been using eumovate too and it is the recommended choice for steroid creams in pregnancy. Put your mind at rest and see your GP, plus you get free prescriptions so def go through GP!!!

It's not that it's dangerous for baby, it's that it has been proven absolutely to be safe. I'm sure you'll be just fine :) :) :) All medical products are extremely cautious, especially after the Thalidomide disaster.

I've been using hydrocortozone (sp) cream for the excema on my face that popped up when I got pregnant and I'm sure my doctor would not have prescribed it if it would harm baby and it's a steroid cream as well

Dont worry hun, Boots wont recommend ANYTHING to pregnant ladies. I went to the counter with some Gavison & she looked at my bump & said sorry we cant sell you this!

I've also used a steroid cream on dermatitis, synalar. The consultant assured me I could use it in pregnancy. Topical application is quite different from oral or intramuscular steroids.

i use eumovate on my face every day and night i haev to as my eczema has been terrible all over since i was 2 months pregnant. im sure my dermatologist wouldnt have gave me it if i wasnt allowed to use it. he said i had pregnancy eczema so i think everything should be ok

i wouldnt worry about it too much.. the chemist always try and put you off stuff if youre pregnant..

ive got SPD and my consultant offered me cocodomal 500/30mg .. but i refused cause i can still walk around.. in pain.. but can still walk .. anyways.. a few weeks back.. the SPD flared up sooo horrible i had to grab onto things to walk.. it was a sunday so couldnt get intouch with a dr or midwife..

i got me mum to go chemist for me and get me some cocodomal.. in the chemist they only sell the 500/8mg ones.. so its not even that strong..

my mum said i was pregnant and he refused point blankly to give them her... even tho the consultant had offered me ones like 3 times stronger than the ones in there.. he said cocodomal can mess the fluid up.. but.. if they were that bad.. why was my consultant offering me even stronger ones???

i know yours has nothing to do with cocodomal but just letting you know that all people who work in chemists must be the same.. i think they just say no to cover themselfs tbh.. so try not to worry too much about it and speak to your DR tomorrow to see if its safe.. xx
