Hi All

Looking for some feedback on the HSG test. I have heard a lot of things and I am hoping to hear some of your experiences on what to expect and what will help this test go smoothly. Have an upcoming test this month and I am worried. Thx

I have no advice to give, but I have heard that it can be rather uncomfortable. I wish you the best of luck with the procedure and your results!

I had an HSG back in the end of November last year. It really wasn't bad. The only thing I found uncomfortable was when she put the catheter in. Otherwise it was fine, just some slight discomfort but no pain. It was over quickly and I only spotted a bit afterwards and had some very slight cramping.

I'll give you the same advice as the doctor who performed it on me: relax! I think it helps to make it easier for the doctor to do it as quickly and painlessly as possible. I'd advise you to take some painkillers about 1 hour before if you're afraid of any possible pain. You could also bring a panty liner with you in case the doctor doesn't give you one. It's for any spotting plus you'll be dripping the leftover dye for a few hours afterward.

Don't read the internet for horror stories either. It'll just rattle you and make you worry for nothing.

Hope it goes well and gives you good news:flower:

Hi there! I had mine 3 months ago and it wasn't a terrible experience as I had heard it can be for some. I felt hardly any discomfort until the dye was going in and I had some cramping- as soon as it felt really intense, it was done. I could watch everything on a screen and the doctor was explaining everything as we went so that was interesting and helped me relax.

My advice is to try to get someone to drive you- I was absolutely fine to drive but it was a lot of comfort to know that my husband was there waiting and that I didn't have to drive afterwards.

They say it can increase fertility for 3 months after too... so hopefully that will be the case for you! :) I'm in the 2ww right now so I'll find out soon if that was true for me or not.

good luck!

Thank you so much for everyone's comforting words. I am feeling a lot less worried about this HSG thing.

Hello, just wondering how you went?

I had the hcg test around September and it wasn't that bad in my opinion. I maybe had slight cramps afterwards but not painful at all. It mainly just felt wet and icky afterwards and I had a bit of spotting for a day or so.

Hi everyone am new to this forum. My hubby and I have been ttc with #1 for the past six months unsuccessfully. Wednesday I did mu first hsg which came back normal but I am bit concern about possible side effect am feeling which lead me to this forum. During the hsg examination I have minor cramps that last only a few minutes. I was completely normal until I got home and started to eat. As is eat I suddenly starts to develop cramps again which became more instead the more I head. Suddenly I was in so much pain I had to stop eating because the pain became unbearable. I was crying and shaking at the severity of the cramp. My hubby immediately tried getting contact with my doctor unsuccessfully because it was way past closing time. I was in such terrible pain I could hardly walk. I felt as if I wanted to do what I usually do whenever I
Have terrible menstruation cramps and that is to sit inside the bathroom for a few minutes and it usually helps. But as soon as I went to the bathroom I started to feel as if I wanted to throw up and I did just that but it didn't last long. In fact I think I only throw up what I was eating and after doing that I immediately started to feel a lot better. The pain went away about 25mins later but I was still cramp. I went to bed but I was really miserable because of the cramp. My hubby wanted to rush me to the emergency room but I refused. When I woke up in the morning i still had cramps but not as terribleas bbefore but I would barely sit up without my hubby helping me. I was so bloated I felt like a pregnant person and I was 100% sure I wasn't pregnant. But I suddenly realized that the cramps was not the same as before it wasn't feeling like menstruation cramps anymore but that of really bad gas. My hsg test was on Wednesday and am still feeling a bit bloated and cramp but not as bad as before. I went to my doctor who did a regular check up and prescribe me some motilium but I am still a bit worried about an infection. Has anyone had similar experiences with hsg? I have already called my doctor to talk about my fear and was advised that was probably nothing but I should check for any sign of unusual discharge or itchy....

I had an HSG done last June, I wasn't too nervous about the procedure as I was just excited about being one step closer to being given Clomid!! The pain of the dye is like intense period pain but only for a short time, I found the difficult part was not being able to move like you normally would when having cramps. It's a strange sensation having to stay completely still!!

I just had an HSG done 2 weeks ago. Here's how mine went:

They had me go to a local surgery center here, I didnt get any surgery done obviously but they still wanted a clean room to do the test in. Anyway, they insert a speculum and they do a spray to numb your cervix. That burns for a few seconds but it's not terrible. Then they insert the tube for the dye which I didn't notice at all. Then they insert the dye. That, I did notice. It burned quite a bit for me and everything "down there" cramped for a second or two but all of it only lasted maybe 5 or 6 seconds then it was fine. They took a pic on my back, had me turn to my left and take a pic and then turn to my right and take a pic and then it was done. Only lasted about 5-10 mins overall. Then, about 20 mins later, doc came in told me my results (which were A okay btw) and I was sent home.

All in all, a very easy test.

Hi Girls, I thought I would help other girls like me who research before anything telling you my good experience with the HSG test.

I was freaking out going to my appointment due to all the bad things I had read online. I wish I knew before hand how I would feel. I know every body is a different body and people feels things differently also depending on your condition but I did not feel a thing!

I had my done at the RMA office in Basking Ridge NJ. The doctor who conduct my test was amazing and explaining little by little how everything would feel. The only thing I felt that was very uncomfortable was the speculum also used when we have our pap smear test done, and we already know how it feels. Besides that, nothing else, no pain or any cramps like I had read online. It took like 15 mins for the entire exam. =) So don't be afraid =)

Hi,
Missmetal...I hope your HSG went well as I am finding this post 2 mos after the post date.
I have an HSG test tomorrow and I'm so nervous.
I was reassured by the FS nurse and doctor that they do plenty everyday and there is really nothing to worry about as far as pain goes-minimal pain, more like discomfort than pain and maybe some minor cramping. Advised Tylenol before and after procedure.
I am not worried about the pain necessarily...I am just so nervous about the results. Though I have no real reason to suspect tubal abnormalities (other than lack of conception...but I also have PCOS and do not ovulate), I am still extremely nervous that they may find something wrong. I'm on pills to try to induce ovulation and pills I can handle...but if they find tubal infertility than I am nervous my only option is IVF and I am just praying for a good HSG result tomorrow!
