The great British class calculator on bbc website

My mum and dad got different results, I am not sure how as they live together

I own a house and live in a rented property, there's no category for me! When I chose own it made me established middle class, when I chose rent it made me affluent new worker. I think I'm an anomaly anyway, DH and I are both university educated, he is in a professional career (I'm a SAHM), but we haven't got 2 pennies to rub together so pauper is more like it

This is exactly us. It said we were established middle class. Surely we should have more money if we were established middle class?! I must be missing a trick somewhere :/

I'm a pauper too smileyfaces!

Strange because I've always been teased for being 'posh' because of my accent. I read the different categories and I think I'd put myself in emergent service worker.

I still dont understand how I got put in the bottom class haha! Both me and OH work and have done since we were 16...only time Ive not worked is for both of my maternity leaves :dohh:

I put that I knew a solicitor and an accountant, I was sure I would get some brownie points for that! X

I put that I know a scientist, apparently I'm no less of a pauper for it

Looks like im joining you two on the pauper ranks. Always nice to feel good about yourself. Lol.

Established Middle Class - I think that's based solely on joint income as we don't own a house?

ETA: yeah, if I change our joint income down a category we're 'emergent service workers'

I'm the lowest one, which is, I think, based solely on our low income and the fact that we rent. Didn't even consider people who know (pretty much all including scientist, artist etc) or our social interests. I don't feel like we're poor though, we're not starving or homeless so

Welcome to the club Emyandpotato :haha:

I agree with you about the income, we are on the lowest income too and dont necessarily struggle all that much. We learnt to live within our means a long time ago!

Emergent service workers

Percentage of population
19%
Average age
34
This class group is financially insecure with low scores for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors:

This is the youngest of all the class groups
People in this group have the highest score for emerging culture, which includes going to gigs, using social media and playing sport
They are an urban group, living in inexpensive locations in large cities like Liverpool and Newcastle
They socialise with a broad range of people
Jobs in this group include chefs, nursing auxiliaries and production assistants

New affluent worker which fits. I come from working class background. Put myself through university and both me and dh trained as teachers. Im sahm now. Class is such a fluent thing now though and i dont it really makes a difference to the type of person you are

I'm Elite. I've always considered myself Middle Class. Not sure if Elite sounds better or worse! Who comes up with this nonsense anyway?

Us too. It's funny because I consider us to live very comfortably. We rent a small house in a nice ish area and have a car. I don't mean this as a martyr at all but I can't think of many expensive things except becoming a home owner that I want. We don't scrimp and save at all.

We don't have a car which I think saves us loads. I like expensive clothes, that's my vice, but I buy them only rarely and usually second hand!

Emergent service workers apparently! All because we rent and don't own

Elite apparently here too but I don't agree.
