So the day was 14 days past my due date, and I had already turned down the invitation to be induced 3 times and was expecting another call later that day. I had gone for monitoring the day before and everything was fine except maybe my blood pressure, but I told them that was because I was in hospital and you are making me nervous!. After the monitoring I went to l&d to check my waters, I didnt think theyd gone but just wanted to check after the previous night. Whilst I was there she said I can do another stretch n sweep, I said yes why not..I had, had 3 already whats 1 more!! The midwife said I was 4-5,what!! How can I not be in labour already?! During the monitoring I had been getting a lot of tightening and after the stretch n sweep they were like mild contractions. I had been left in the room and they started to pick up..and was wondering whether I was destined to give birth in a hospital after all
I had to drive myself home quickly I thought!
So anyway the contractions died off and I went to bed as usual. The next morning after the school run they started up again still mild but I decided to go to the supermarket and make sure we had everything in. They continued throughout the day irregularly. I got the call to come in again for monitoring and agreed to 4pm. My mil came over to look after the boys so dh and I could go for the monitoring , I decided I wouldnt drive myself this time! Then about 3.45 some of the contractions were getting quite painful, still irregular but I just didnt fancy getting in the car. I rang to say I wanted to cancel, and said well Ill be coming in tomorrow for induction anyway if I dont deliver tonight.. not thinking that was at all possible anymore. I then rang the hb team and said Ive been having contractions, dont think Im in labour but just giving you the heads up. I was then met with the oh your 42weeks, we dont offer a home birth pas 41+6. I was always under the impression that up to and including 42was ok. I said well I dont want to come into hospital..so she told me the risks and said Id have to speak to the supervisor of midwives. The supervisor came on and reiterated the risks and I said Im aware of that but I want to still birth at home. She said shed send a midwife around.
So by this point it was 4.15, my mil said shed take my youngest son whos 3 to her house just in case, my eldest son (5) wanted to stay. I still didnt think I was in labour but decided to have a birth. In the bath the pain started to ramp up so I told dh to ring them back and say I was in labour and could the midwife come quicker. Dh then started filling the birth pool.
I got into the birth pool around 4.30 and the pain was increasing. My midwife got there around 5.00 and I was really having to breath through the contractions by this point. She asked if I wanted to get out and be examined. I did as I wanted to know how much I had progressed. I flopped onto the floor, and was told Im 5cm what?!! I was 4-5 yesterday..how could this be? Then within minutes it felt like my body was pushing I thought this cant be right I said need to push the midwife said just go with your body minutes later I heard the heads out then a couple more pushes and the body came out too of my gorgeous daughter Emily Rose. Born at 6pm on the dot.
I opted for a managed 3rd stage due to my previous ppb, and the placenta followed 20mins later. Dh said it was enormous!! Thomas was such a proud big brother, hed been there for the whole thing. I was so proud of him, hed been great..offering me drinks and was telling the midwives all about placenta and cords!
The midwife couldnt believe Id never tried gas n air so let me have a go after as a bonus for 3 births without lol wow I loved it, Ive missed out all these times! She checked me over and said I didnt need any stitches.
I fed Emily whilst they cleaned up everything. Home births certainly dont need to be messy.
Emily was then weighed and thats when the shock of size became apparent as she didnt look like it, ½ oz short of 10lb!
However there was a downside to this as she was just over the level for glucose testing. They needed to test her glucose levels 3 times after a feed, we were going to need to transfer arrghh after my perfect home birth I was still going to have to go to into hospital. They said I could stay in the birth centre as a compromise. An ambulance came to collect us and we had to say bye to Thomas and Daddy just a couple of hours after the birth.my dream was us all cuddled up enjoying the new baby but it wasnt to be.
It actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise though as Emily was displaying signs of an infection by 5amish and that would have been even more frightening at home, at least we were in the right place to get help. We ended up staying in 3 nights, which did drive me potty as I hate hospitals but were home now and everyone is enjoying Emily. She is feeding like a champ, would be on the boob permanently given the chance!
