Not sure if this is any help to you, but there is an 'empty folder' option under the 'Folder Controls' (go to User CP, then on the left go down to list subscriptions and click on that.. then you have the folder controls at the top)

To stop subscribing automatically, go to User CP - Settings & Options - Edit Options, then go down to Messaging & Notification
Scroll down to:
Default Thread Subscription Mode
When you post a new thread, or reply to a topic, you can choose to automatically add that thread to your list of subscribed threads, with the option to receive email notification of new replies to that thread.
click on the pull-down and select 'do not subscribe'
Personally, I love the subcribe feature
I just click unsubscribe on threads that I lose interest in, but many threads die out on their own.
