LO is on 5ml once a day, have tried syringing it in 2 parts but 0.5ml at least always is spit out at the end. Can it be put in formula and when is the best time to give it, before a feed etc. As the doc didnt give any directions and I want to make sure its at its most effective.

Could I put it in a bottle/mixed with cooled boiled water?

We always gave ours to LO via syringe. My tips would be to make sure LO is lying down (we used to do it first thing in the morning when he was still in his cot) and get the syringe as far back in his mouth as possible. Then he has no option but to swallow. I used to do it in in 2 goes so that he didn't have too much to swallow at once.

I did ask the paediatrician about giving it in his milk but he said that the problem is that a) it is supposed to be given half an hour before a feed so that it stays down rather than refluxing back up with the feed and b) you can't guarantee LO will take all the feed and therefore get the whole dose.

thanks ill try that first thing in the morning so that makes sense, he was sitting up, so it would be ok to use a bottle mixed with a lil water do you think? its hard to wait too long un til next feed as he has cried after it both times.

The key is to get it in LO, and get it to stay in LO. My LO was capable of being dragged out for half an hour after he woke til his first feed, until he dropped his night feed and then it got difficult as he would wake up ravenous so I would give it to him after hiis first nap of the day instead. Generally at least half an hour before a feed is what you should be aiming for - but equally too soon after the last feed could mean it refluxes back up with that one.

Try a bottle if you think he will take it all? I found the syringe much more reliable though. Did it quickly and distracted him immediately with a toy. The version he had tasted orangey and after a while he used to open his mouth for it every morning when he saw the syringe and i said 'juice?'. He does the same now for calpol!

LO usually has a 4.30am feed and is up at 6.30-7am so can wait until 7.30am for his feed, Ill try bottle then first thing as he doesnt spit up he has silent reflux so luckily everything stays down, I just heard not to mix omeprazole with milk i.e. alkaline as its less effective or maybe thats just the tablets which we didnt get on with at all.

The ranitidine he is on is rapidly wearing off and the new meds has yet to kick in, do you think we'll see results soon? thanks again x

Just another thought my LO is CMPI, the liquid doesnt contain lactose does it, as online it says the tablets do but my LO may have a reaction if he is lactose intolerant?

My LO is on Nutramigen, he is also cmpi and lactose intolerant (or at least he was, following a tummy bug - we are gradually reintroducing dairy now and he seems to be coping fine). We wre prescribed both the liquid and the fasttabs at the same time and by the same paediatrician that prescribed the Nutramigen so I think it should be fine but check with your doc if you are concerned hun.

It took us a good week to see a difference. He was still very sicky but it didn't seem to bother him as much. He was much happier once we weaned him, which we did at 17 weeks on medical advice. Fingers crossed for you hon.
