To drink or not to drink?

Hiya

At the end of the day it is your choice. The advice people have posted pretty much sums it up.

When I was TTC I was so sure I would find no alcohol for 9 months hard so bought lots of non alcoholic drinks to try. I found some I liked but since I got my BFP I have gone right off the idea of drinking at all. Something I certainly did not expect to happen.

I still have some 0% beers in the fridge and a non alcho bottle of bubbly too ready for occasions when I may fancy one or want to *appear to have a drink still*.

Good luck sweety *hugs*

Yeh i love the non alcoholic wine i found.

Alcohol would ruin it, its so yummy! Drink it out of a wine glass too at special occasions feels like your joining in even tho ur not.

YUS thats exactly it, I dont really drink coke or lemonade and altho I am an orange juice freak at the moment its still not what I would have on an evening out or special occasion. Its all smoke n mirrors really but it makes me feel better and takes away the suspicious looks from those you dont want to know yet XD

I had the odd drink when I was expecting my second baby maybe two or three times but I didn't touch a drop in my last pregnancy and I haven't in this one, my daughter was and is absolutely fine but I have totally gone off it and I don't miss it even a little bit xx

OOOOO another thing is that our local pubs are still buggers at not having any non alcho drinks that arent soft drinks *le grrrrr* BUT I started to drink indian tonic water with ice n a slice. Looks like a gin n tonic, smells like a gin and tonic, hell it tastes like a gin n tonic it just has no gin wheeeee OOOOO or virgin (no vodka or sherry) bloody marys which are also very good, I had a fair few if we went to the pub on a sunday for a roastie. Again its all about feeling like you are taking part but also being guilt free too.

XXX

Strict no for me.

Its not hard to give it up for nine months. Whats the point in having a sip here or there or a glass here or there. May aswell just abstain

No amount has been proven safe so not worth the risk imo, you really dont know what effect it can have on your baby.

Remember that some DOES pass through the placenta to your baby.

Best of luck.

it's not a matter of it being 'hard' to give up, i just don't believe i have to. each to their own.

I have had a few drinks in this pregnancy. Never more than one on a single occasion and probably only on a about 5 occasions anyway. But for the most part I haven't wanted to touch alcohol and am happy to go out and not drink, but I had a small drink at a wedding and a party I went to etc. That was my choice at the time though.

I didn't drink through first tri though as really couldn't stomach it.

Alcohol is a drug.....and i dont think anyone wants to risk bringing any harm to their unborn child.

The truth is we don't really know for sure what a safe level of alcohol consumption is for a pregnant woman. So many experts now recommend that you play it safe by steering clear of alcohol altogether. The National Health and Medical Research Council recommends that not drinking during pregnancy is the only safe option.

Some health professionals may still give advice from older government guidelines, which said that one or two standard drinks once or twice a week is not harmful. The latest guidelines and research suggests that there is no safe of drinking during pregnancy.

It is up to each individual to make their own decisions, but choosing to drink is ignoring the facts and common sense in my opinion.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and thats mine. Id prefer to put my little girl first.

SCIENTISTS have captured graphic ultrasound images of the damage done to unborn babies as a result of women drinking during pregnancy. Just one glass of wine a week can make babies "jump" in the womb throughout a nine-month pregnancy. Experts believe this abnormal hyperactive behavior is the result of alcohol slowing or ******ing the formation of the central nervous system.

My view is this.....Would you give your newborn a bottle of wine? Or a can of beer? :winkwink:

:happydance:

Writing this I am 16 weeks pregnant and have had one very small glass of champagne (dad's birthday). I decided to give up alcohol and told this to every medical professional who has asked (midwife, 3 G.PS, nurse at EPU etc). Every single one of them told me that was up to me but I could have 1-2 units of alcohol once or twice a week if I wanted (this surprised me). Every one told me that the worst thing I could do in pregnanct is smoke a ciggarette (I don't smoke anyway).

I decided that if I want a small glass of wine on a special occasion then I can have it - One of my best mates is getting married soon and I will have a champagne with orange juice to toast her.

However, I do try to remember what happened at my 12 week scan - Baby was in the wrong position and wouldn't move for the sonographer so she made me go and drink something with caffine and sugar. Seeing how much the caffine affected LO really hit home - (s)he was like a bloomin mexican jumping bean 10 minutes after I finished drinking my Mocha. It really hit home that what I ate or drank really did affect the baby.

Tut Tut Shan!! this is propaganda at it very worse. There is no evidence to suggest this scan is as a result of drinking. I don't believe it is, at my 20 week scan baby had hiccups and it was exactly like this. And I certainly hadn't had a drink at 9.30 in the morning :D

I have every respect for people's opinions, whether they are the same as mine or not. But scaremongering with what is effectively bullshit is not fair :)

Im just reposting the vid and comment from another thread.

We have no proof that that it isnt the effect of alcohol.....i wasnt trying to scaremonger anyone.

Just to get people to look into it and think about it more seriously.

I know hun :hugs:

But I don't think posting a video of something we don't even know to be true helps! :flower:

I think on the last thread most people agreed that it was unlikely to be true x

Ahhh the media loves to report these things - it sells papers. The scientists themselves are suggesting one of many hypothetical reasons for such behaviour! Am wondering when we are gonna get to the point where we can't consume anything unless its organically grown in a locked room in special soil.

EVERYTHING we put into our systems has the potential to affect the baby (food, drink, medication) and it is important to remember that. I think a McDonalds a week has the potential to do more damage to your LO than a sip of wine.

hi

i was once show a placenta of a lady who had smoked during pregnancy ( i was on a midwife placement thing) the placenta had a hard layer of grit in it and i think this is why they say a big no no to smoking.

i've decided not to drink but i think thats a personal thing (and i think everyone has a right to a choice) and i drink to get merry and thats not going to happen with one so whats the point!!!

has anyone tried no alcohol beer and cider?. . .rather nice really. i had a few last night with a friend of ours who has just had a heart attack . . .it was just nice to sit in a group and have a beer!!!

(Ps may never drink again cause our friends were clearly drinking beer filled alcohol and were a mess and if normally look like that i'm never drinking again!!! lol )

i think you have to remember that anything in your blood goes into the babies blood- that said i seam to remember that by the 3rd trimester - alchol in small doses is filtered out...

I personally am struggling to drink water let alone alcohol right now :(

But I must admit I could never see the point of having one drink...

I think most people hide the fact they drink if they do,,, MY SIL drank with just about every evening meal - and it did her LO no harm (she only had about 1 large glass...)

so because someone doesn't agree with your point of view, then they aren't taking the matter seriously?

this thread reminds me of why i shouldn't be on these forums. *sigh*
