Too many ultrasounds bad for baby?

Obviously it is used differently but they use U?S to remove fat-ultrasound cavitation, clean jewerly and to provide deep heat for injuries. Just saying what it CAN do. Now I get the techs or Doctors are trained VERY differently to remove fat vs scan.

I know this was in Sweeden but still. Not the only one I read saying same thing about machines not being maintained to correct levels.

This is taken from FDA:
Because of the particular concern for fetal exposures, national and international organizations have advocated prudent use of ultrasound imaging. Furthermore, the use of diagnostic ultrasound for non-medical purposes such as fetal keepsake videos has been discouraged.

Keep in mind what HAS changed over the years is these machines getting stronger to provide the in demand crisper images.

I'm a sonographer. I scan my baby every second day or so. The bio effects of ultrasound happen after hours (literally like 7) of CONSTANT scanning with high power Doppler. You are fine to have many scans that are less than an hour in length. I wouldn't worry xx

I know we shouldn't google things too much, but I do rely on it quite a bit and evaluate what I find.

There is quite a lot of opinion out there that enough testing has not been done of the newer more powerful ultrasound machines or dopplers.

I don't personally feel the need to peek in at baby on a frequent basis so just stick to the minimum testing my OB recommends (8 weeks, 12 weeks, 20 weeks, 35 weeks).

I am not an anxious pregnant woman though so that probably sways my decision to err on the side of caution and go with medical need scans.

If my OB said I was high risk and needed more frequent testing, I would totally do it. I just don't do it for pure curiosity!

I agree with this. If I have issues come up in pregnancy and weekly US is needed then so be it but to go multiple times for basically fun I think it is to unknown.

The Doppler I have heard is about 30 minutes of US. I have read more then a few women on here say the tech or Dr. will not turn the Doppler on during early scans to hear HB as it is to risky.

Then factor in some who have thought MAYBE autism may be linked. I mean there have been many "possible links" so who knows.

Autism seems to be the condition of the moment and people are making 'possible' links to it left right and centre; just like they have been doing with cancer for years (i.e. "candle wax causes cancer" and other ludicrous claims like that). Autism is a condition caused by physiological differences in the brain, not ultrasounds or vaccines. My son is autistic, a condition he was probably more susceptable to due to my father having Aspergers, not the 10 or so ultrasounds I had when I was pregnant with him (so many due to complications with irritable uterus and funnelling cervix).

OP: health advice is so overly cautious for pregnant women (think of the huge long list of things we can't consume or do; lists that seem to get far more extensive every year it seems). Never in a million years would they list all the things we aren't allowed to do for the fear of the tiny risk incurred and leave off ultrasounds if there were any real concerns whatsoever.

As I said, I had 10 ultrasounds with my son, and other than having an ASD (which I don't count as a drawback, as it makes him the wonderful little guy he is), he is healthy, happy, 'normal' and very intelligent cognitively for his age (probably linked to the ASD - which for him has left him slightly socially impaired, but advanced in other ways - reminds me so much of my dad!). Try not to worry and trust your health professionals. And stay away from Google :haha:

There is little/no risk from frequent scanning, not if done for the length of time a normal ultrasound takes. I have had 6 scans already and have another 5-6 scheduled. We met with our consultant 2 days after our 20 week scan and he asked us if we wanted another ultrasound that day just to check. We did decline but I trust his judgement and he wouldn't have offered another scan if it was detrimental to the baby :flower:

I probably sound a bit nuts in my previous post, but like I said, I always follow OB recommendations. I just err on the side of caution and don't do anything above what the doctor thinks is medically necessary.

I will admit that I am skeptical of many things that are deemed safe for every day use and do go the extra mile to get organic food, body lotions and household cleaners etc where I can. I try to be as natural as possible when it comes to keeping my kids healthy. Im a bit more reckless when it comes to my own health!

Aw wish I could scan myself lol. I'd be doing it all the time.

As far as I'm concerned, if there were any known risks I'm sure they'd be pointed out prior to any scan and you would have the option of whether to proceed with having a scan or not.

I will only be getting the usual scans done so next one at 20 weeks and that should be it. Unless for some reason we can see baby's gender then we may consider a private scan.

It's both wonderful and addictive to have it at my fingertips! I guess I lose that "wow! Look how much it's grown!" Factor! :)

I'm a cautious one when it comes to ultrasound. I've only had ONE this pregnancy, at 21 weeks, and I hope that's all I'll have. But if I had a real health concern while pregnant that necessitated more then that, I'd do it. Ultrasounds can help troubleshoot possible problems and save lives.
