Hi everyone

Emma is 5 weeks old now and she really likes her milk. Last week I upped her bottles from 4-6oz as she was finishing them all the time and still now, most of the time she is finishing her bottles (6oz) so I'm having to get another bottle and she's then only having a little, but still - she's having about 7oz-8oz. This isn't in one straight go, she can take 2 hours to do this, but until she has she won't settle and it's worse at night.

I'll happily make up bigger bottles but I just wanted to check this is ok as on the milk it says 8-12 week babies should be on 6 scoops and average weight is 10lbs, whereas Emma is only 5 weeks and I think she weighs about 7 1/2lbs now (getting her weighed tomorrow, 2 weeks ago she was 6 1/2)

Any advice much appreciated x x

My HV told me not to go by whats on the tin and feed Oliver what he needs Oliver weighs 12lb and He is 7 weeks and is on 5oz but some times needs a top up of 1 to 2 ozs, we tried making his bottles 6oz but he would then not drink it so we went back down. Tonight he didn't settle till he had had 7ozs. Normally at bedtime I do a bigger bottle for him as he settles quicker and sleeps longer.. Sorry I know thats not much help, Ollie can take 5oz then 1 to 2 hours later need another feed so we give water till he reaches the 3 hour point, this seems to work really well. It must be hard with her not settling and taking so long to feed. All you can do is try it and adjust things accordingly or try water in between. Hope I have helped a bit, take care :hugs: XX

Hi, are you sure she's not using the bottle to pacify herself? Does she take a dummy? I know Ruby used to want the dummy after a bottle. 2 hours is a very long time to be feeding. Also are you still using the stage 1 teats?

She will only take a dummy when she's not very hungry - like if she's due a feed at 5pm, she might take it at 4pm - but after that, no chance! We're still on stage 1 teats because she dribbles quite a lot so I thought the next teats up might make this problem worse as the milk will come out quicker?

She's not feeding for 2 hours straight, it's more 30 mins for the bottle then over the next 1 1/2 hrs she'd have 'bits' - although, since making up 7oz bottles she does seem to be stopping this and will drink one 'in one go' (interspersed with breaks for winding) so maybe I haven't been making her bottles big enough before. Still not sure whether hungry baby milk would help though - sometimes she'll drink almost 7oz then she can be hungry 2hrs later, whereas others (like now) she's gone 4 1/2 hrs after drinking the 7oz!!!

Mine had 15oz in 3 1/2 hours yesterday! I don't know what's up, alot of babies seem to be wanting alot of food lately! Maybe they are thirsty more than hungry?

Anyway - we upped to 5oz lately, after a week at 4oz but we havn't dropped a meal (for her weight she should have 5oz x5 in 24 hours and is 10lb 11oz)

Go with what your baby is telling you - we are going to try a 6oz feed before bed and see if that way she'll drop a night time feed so we can work towards 5 meals.

I think yours could be going through a growth spurt

(re water - my mum says she gave us it but my book from the docs says not to. My mum also had my brother on 8oz with baby rice at this stage!! <-- not recommended today tho')

Thanks ladies - I feel better now, knowing other babies are similar!! She's just had 7oz a bottle and left 2oz, this was after finishing her 7oz bottle 5 hrs earlier - whereas sometimes she'll be crying for more after just 2 hours!
