Tummy time

I'm not a mum. I do work regularly with paediatric physiotherapists though and they have said regularly that tummy time is really important for a baby's physical development- core strength, back muscle strength etc hence the NHS "back to sleep" campaign being rebranded "Back to sleep, front to play"

There are different ways to do tummy time, such as resting across your lap etc.

It's still more about seats that strap kids into place though. "Front to play," is completely unnatural and not developmentally appropriate for tiny babies. They'll flip on their own when they're ready.

Our pediatrician always told us it's not that babies specifically need "tummy time," but they need time to be able to move freely, and they need time when they are not laying flat on their backs with their heads on the floor.

Before my son's arms, chest, and neck muscles were strong enough for him to enjoy doing much on his tummy, he loved being lain on my shins when I was laying in bed with my knees up, so I could hold his sides and we were looking at each other. I'd also lay him across me with his upper body over my stomach. Both positions helped him get a little more upright so that he could look around more easily.

I went to my baby pediatrician today and he said that I need to encourage her to do more tummy time. At least since I posted this thread I've been doing more exercises with my baby in the floor and she are starting to like it. However she still doesn't like to do much tummy time.
