Hi all.
So i have had 3 vaginal births, all with just some gas and air.
But my 3rd baby was back to back and i did not deal with his labour well at all. It was only 9 hours and the last two i was at the hospital for and they were the most intense 2 hours of my life. I lost control of myself, i had immense pressure of needing to push at only 6cm. I felt like he was just sat there right on my bum. It wasn't the best experience.
So what if like to know is what can i have that will take the edge off more thing gas and air does. Is the next step morphine/pethaden? I had morphine for gallbladder attacks and it worked a treat but made me extremely nauseated. I don't really want to be throwing up in labour as well?
Whats your experience?

I was given a shot of something (wasn't morphine) which made me feel out of it and took the edge off the contractions, but did nothing for the back pain. I didn't experience any nausea with it. Maybe ask your medical provider at your next appointment what some options are at the place you'll be delivering?

Thanks :)
I did ask last time but i guess i didn't really pay much attention as i just presumed i wouldn't need any like my last two births lol but im pretty sure at my hospital its water ( either bath or shower ) if you want, gas and air, morphine, then epidural.

If your uk it gas then diamorphine wich i think is similar to pethadine. The can give you another inj at the same time of antisickness then it's epi xx

No im in AU but i think we do things pretty similar to UK.

Hey i'm in the UK and the pain relief available at my local hospital is gas&air, pethidine or epidural. Last time i had g&a and pethidine but the pethidine made me throw up. So may just stick to g&a this time if i can handle the pain as scared of getting an epi for some reason.

i had a bad labor with my 5th so when i was induced with my 6th i said i wanted an epi straight away but then decided to see how it went in the end it was a great birth on only gas and air every labor is different i would play it by ear xx

I didn't have gas and air with my last birth so can't compare it but I found my TENS machine was amazing. I also found hot pressure to help with my back pain. You could also try water to see if it helps with back pain, which loads of people say it does. I didn't actually like my pool but worth a try as everyone and every labour is different.

Yep, I think Pethidine is the next step. I had pethidine in my first labour though, and I really didnt like it at all personally. I felt out of it, couldnt concentrate on anything and felt really sick so chose to just stick with gas and air in my next two labours.

Doesn't meant to say that you'll dislike it though, just wanted to share my experience x

Thank you. That's what im worried about, if it doesn't agree with me i have to deal with that as well as labour lol

With my first gas and air made me feel SO sick and I'd heard bad stories about pethidine so ended up with an epidural. With my second I went in at 5cms refused gas and air and after learning I was 5cms (last labour took 9 hours from 5cms, needed pitocin drip to speed it up etc) straight out asked for epidural, they didn't even get a chance to place the epidural as my active labour was only 20 minutes and then 10minutes pushing and she was born, but the midwife thought I was nuts for refusing gas and air when she checked my cervix after the birth for tears. I totally get what you mean on not wanting to be sick or feel sick in labor, I was sick during early labor with my first and throwing up whilst contracting ISNT fun. I guess it's down to weighing up your feelings. Personally on 3rd pregnancy now I'm pretty easy going but would still rather go without or get an epidural than mess with the spaced out, sickness etc. but again that's down to how my body handles things. Some people go fine on all 3, you never know till you try/don't try lol.

But my two labors couldn't of been any more different, so try not to base this one on your last, keep an open mind xx

i had diamorphine. i wanted an epidural but nobody could give me one. i think its just gas & air diamorphine epidural and pethidine? it must be scary for you after that experience. i felt quite panicked in labour because the midwives were so busy they did not have time to talk to me about what i wanted etc.

Thanks girls!
Guess ill just aim for gas and air this time if baby is in normal position and re-evaluate if bub is back to back again. Hopefully he/she won't be.

I'm had a back to back labour. It's my only one so I have nothing to compare it to. I had gas and air which didn't do anything then had an epidural. The first anaesthetist couldn't get it in....he tried six times. The second one got it in straight away. It found it great.
The midwife said after she didn't really think another drug they used (sorry can't remember name) would have been appropriate. Another midwife said that back to back labours can result in wanting to.push too early.

I'm going in with the same mindset as you. I'm going to try spinning babies techniques and try to make sure baby isn't back to back. If I succeed I'll try on just gas and air but if I'm back to.back i may just get the epi again.

I had my tens machine and gas and air last time. I was being induced and at 5cm they advised me to have an epidural because they were going to ramp up the induction meds. In the end they sat me up to do the epidural and that must have made me dilate Quickly because I went from 5 to 10 cm in 40 mins. They tried to do the epidural but I was moving around too much and I am A little plus sized so they did not manage in the end.
This time Around my hospital now offer a Remifentanyl PCA (patient controlled analgesia). It is very short acting so if you don't like it you just stop using it and it does not cross the placenta so does not make baby drowsy. It works a bit like morphine/diamorphine/ pethidine but like I say does not cross the placenta. You press a little button when your contraction starts and you get a little bit of the drug which is said to take alot of the edge off a contraction. Yiu can still use tens with it and if you really want yiu can have gas and air with it. If you don't like it you stop using it and it wears off in a minute or two and if yOU want you can have an epidural.
Not everywhere offers it yet but it is increasing in popularity. I only know about it because I had an anaesthetist appointment a few weeks ago.

I had morphine with lo, it took the edge off for a while and didn't make me sick. In fact it was the g&a that made me sick lol. It wasn't enough in the end unfortunately That labour was a disaster compared to my previous two though, I was aiming for another home birth and it went so pear shaped lo had to be pulled out with forceps with me under spinal block but at least we avoided c section.
