Uk election

She cant say no i dont think as long as the party leader has a working government which technically she will with support from DUP.

I also read that labour wants to lead as a minority government and i dont understand that. This is where my understanding of politics fails me.

Because coalition and minority governments are different things. The queen has to give permission to whoever is asking. The DUP haven't formed a coalition but are 'giving support' to the Conservatives. So she asked to make a minority government (so, without all the seats), which Labour could also do, BUT I think as Conservatives have more seats than Labour, they get the first 'go' out of courtesy.
So yes, Labour absolutely could have formed a minority government had the queen refused May, which in all honesty she should have done but stupidly hasn't. I think this will be a rather unpopular decision and I suspect people will attempt to call upon a vote of no confidence

Its done, its disaster.

I watched her speech. I am not even convinced she believes what she says.

Oh to be a fly on the wall in number 10. She didn't believe a word of her speech. Disaster indeed.

TBH I hit my lowest low after we voted out last yr. I'm actually in quite a positive frame of mind, younger people are starting to engage and labour did get a lot of votes.

Also, my Facebook and this place is full of people voting labour. It's nice to know I'm in good company

I'm so chuffed for labour and what they managed to achieve in 7 weeks of campaigning but it's not great we now have a right wing govt propped up by an even more right wing party with some horrendous beliefs :nope:

I think if there was another election labour would win more seats, I know in our constituency the labour vote rose dramatically (over 20%) and they're only 2000 votes below Tory who held the seat. But it has historically been between lib dem and tory so I'm not sure how many people voted lib dem tactically to get Tory out and it backfired.

Hopefully it will be one big shambles, another election has to be called and Labour has enough time to campaign to get the majority next time. Whatever happens next it just goes to show that lots of people want change for the good of society and that makes me feel positive for the future :D

xx

I heard Labour think there will be another election soon, I don't think they are willing to let it go just yet

I'm feeling positive too, it looks less like we will have a hard Brexit keeping the single market and freedom of movement so tbh, perhaps naively, I'm less nervous about Brexit than before!

They will be holding another election this year, apparently, so possibly won't be a five year wait. In fact, they already predicted if this happened it's highly unlikely there wouldn't be an early election soon afterwards because minority governments usually don't last long. There's high hope Labour will get into power when this happens. Probably the main reason for another election will be May's desire to have a majority, which gives her more power. As it stands, with a minority government, she has to have the backing of other parties before passing any new laws and she won't want that forever. I can't see her doing a good job of this, so I reckon Labour will become much more popular

It's logical. She won't be satisfied with a minority for long, and will want to try her luck for a majority instead. I think people will see this as their chance to get them out and Labour in. She's made so many monumental mistakes, her reputation (if there was ever one to begin with that wasn't negative) is torn to shreds after this. But, I may add, she is far too arrogant to realise. Like she was with this, the only reason she called an early election was to make an example of Labour, and she failed miserably, only making an example of herself and her party. People also don't want what she's offering, which is the hugest crock of shite known to man

I'm happy labour did as well as they did. I'm glad they have the tories a run for their money. I'm glad we voted against the rhetoric.
The queen can technically say no, it's a power she has but it's rare she would do that due to the implications. It would be very bold, ultimately she listens to the will of the people.
No formal coalition has be made but DUP have agreed to support and confidence. Basically seats and votes on certain things including what goes on the queens speech.
They had a agree some bits though, hard brexit is harder no and bad deal = no deal. Whilst DUP campaigned for leave ultimately a hard brexit deal would not go well in Ireland due to the border.

Did anyone see some of the close leads? Fife north won by 2 votes!

See, I don't think she did listen to the will of the people. I think she listened to the will of the privileged

You'd think some people would have the common decency to resign, but no. I can't believe what a mess the UK is in.
