First time posting. I am almost 42 and have had many miscarriages right at the end of the first trimester before having my daughter who is 5. Now I have had constant miscarriages right around 5 weeks for a year now. Taking Progesterone is the reason I have my daughter, and so I'm doing that now but cannot get over this hump and seeing a Fertility specialist Now And I am pretty sure I'm miscarrying again from 2nd IUI. I feel like there is something I'm missing that an extra medication may be able to help but getting advice from my doctor is like pulling teeth. He heavily suggests IVF and that is what we will do now but how do we help prevent another miscarriage? I feel that the egg isn't holding on. Any advice?

The egg quality diminishes as we age, and that's one reason miscarriage rates are higher for women over 40. I'm really not sure what you can do about that if you want to use your own eggs. I got pregnant 2 months before turning 46, and my OB told me to not get attached bc I would lose the pregnancy (I think by age 45 the miscarriage rate is over 90%) That baby is now 6 years old. So, even though miscarriage rates go way up, there is still a chance. I think you just have to keep trying for that good egg to stick. Best of luck to you!

Have you had AMH and/or FSH tested? Could give you and idea of how your egg situation is. I saw a fertility specialist when I was 34 after 2.5 years TTC and was told my results were comparable to a much older woman and likely had low egg quality as well as low follicle count. This after already being diagnosed and tested for endometriosos and 4 medicated IUI cycles. We did IVF with testing the embryos. Of the 16 eggs they got during stimulation, we ended up with only 3 embryos that made it to day 5 with normal chromosome count. That's a lot of chance for miscarriage!

Anyway, lots of reason for miscarriage but I would bet egg/sperm quality due to age sadly may be the factor. If you move forward with IVF you can check for healthy embryos. I was hesitant to, but in the end I'm glad we did. We did have an early miscarriage with our first attempt, but have a 17 month old and am currently pregnant with our 2nd.
