Unusual baby poop question, please help (TMI too, sorry)

Hi hi,

My LO is 14 months now (am I supposed to stop calling him my baby? Not going to happen lol.) Apologies in advance for the TMI.

Just recently he's been having really REALLY smelly poops that have genuinely woken me up (we are in the same room still, it didn't travel down a hallway but still I have never been woken by a smell before!) They've also increased in quantity - today for example every nappy has been a poo - and they're awful in texture, the only way I can describe it is like raw egg, all stringy and slimey and elasticy (sorry!) He's started to hate having his nappy changed and really try to run away and the last one I've just done just now his bottom is red raw so I'm not surprised he doesn't want me to touch it. I've cleaned him up and lathered him in sudocrem and he seems happy enough for now.

Just googled it quickly and more than one site referred to this being a classic sign of infection/allergy. This would explain him being grumpier than usual and to be honest he seems to be allergic to practically everything already. Does anyone have any experience of this already?

I've managed to be home alone with no car and no pushchair so there's no chance of getting to the drs today

It sounds like it could be toddler diarrhoea, my eldest had it at the same age and it was a nightmare. It's basically diarrhoea or loose, mucusy and smelly stools that occur for no real reason in children aged between about one year and five years of age. Probiotics can help but otherwise it is a case of waiting for it to pass unfortunately . With my eldest the GP eventually agreed to take a stool sample but Sod's law, it cleared up completely on the day I got the sample bottle xx

Thanks I carried on researching myself and found multiple pages that say sore bottom and mucus-like poops are also caused by teething and too much saliva so it could be that too. I'll keep an eye on it and keep putting cream on for now x

I just notice that you said you lathered on sudocream. You may not realise, but if you put too much on then it can stop the nappy bring so absorbent and make the rash worse. You need to just have a very thin layer

If it doesn't work, I've always found metanium better than sudocream at clearing up bad nappy rash x

Thanks, I always heard that because it was a barrier cream you were supposed to slap it on. I don't think I put too much on really but will be careful from now on. Never heard of that other stuff but I'll look it up. Heard a lot of people saying good things about Waitrose baby bottom butter today too lol - apparently it's also good for cradle cap! Random! X

That poo sounds like my LOs teething poo. Honestly, they were rank! Stringy, mucousy and very, very foul smelling. Luckily it's usually just a day or 2 and we've not had it every time she's been teething. Metanium is definitely magic bum cream. It's amazing. Waitrose bottom butter has never been great on my DD but I have heard good things from other people. I actually used it to massage her tummy as it smells so nice!

Yep, I second the teething poo idea. Frankie's teething poos were horrific, super stinky and frequent. X

We'll never recognise teething poo! Lo is on neocate milk and his poos are black and smell like rotten eggs anyway!!
