Upset & worried about what I've heard regarding crawling

My eldest has Aspergers, dyspraxia and ADHD. He never crawled, he bum shuffled. HOWEVER, he was showing issues long before he started to get mobile. He didn't start to bum shuffle till he was nearly 1 year old and by 8 months there were warning signs that something wasn't quite right. Yes there is some studies have found links between autistic tendencies and dyspraxia and non crawling. Its to do with a control in the brain that is learned when the opposite hand/leg crawl starts off but I am pretty sure that it is the non crawling caused by the autism/dyspraxia and not the other way round.
I know plenty of bum shuffling babies who have gone on to be totally sociable and intelligent children.

Nonsense! My brother didn't crawl and bum shuffled til he was 2! He's got no learning difficulties what so ever!
Don't worry hun :hugs:

one of my boys still isnt crawling and they were a year old yesterday. he bum shuffels but didnt start doing that untill 9.5 months. he also hated being on his front (still does) he can walk holding my hand and walks around the furniture.
I wouldnt worry babies learn to do things at their own pace.

I've been told and read that if my baby doesnt crawl then this will lead too future learning diffculties!! I'm really upset about this. I know babies do things at different ages/speeds so I have just left her to do what SHE wants/likes as I never worried about it before. I just assumed she wouldn't crawl, just go straight from sitting - bum shuffling - walking. But now I'm constantly thinking of putting her on her tummy and getting her to crawl but I feel like a bad mum as she hates it!! Apparently crawling is important because your baby is using physical and mental strenght at the same time.

I don't know what to do...shall I keep putting her on her tummy!! She just lies there like shes struggling and wants my help :)

how awful whoever told you it's associated with learning difficulties!! People should keep Their mouths shut if they don't know what they're talking about! I only crawled backwards (what should that say about me?!!) and I'm a 4th level educated health professional; I have no issues with dyspraxia either. Slap the person who told you about the LD!

I think the confusion has arisen because there are sone conditions like dyslexia and dyspraxia that do make it less likely for a child to crawl. around 80% of children with dyslexia don't crawl. However that doesn't mean 80% of children that don't crawl have dyslexia! The VAST majority of children who don't crawl won't go on to develop these conditions, and with the right treatment dyslexia end dyspraxia won't hold a person back anyway.
Not crawling will not cause these conditions, children who have them are just less likely to crawl, so it has nothing to do with encouraging your child, the lack of crawling is a result of the condition rather than the other way round. Lots of children are late crawlers or don't crawl at all and most of them are fine.

I went straight to walking (never crawled) and I don't have any learning difficulties!!

Thanks for all your replies everyone. I feel relieved to be honest, its been playing in my mind since I spoke to the HV and looked it up on the net. Thanks again. x

Dont worry I know two babies who didnt even crawl until they were ten months and one of them was walking on their first birthday!! Some babies dont crawl they shuffle and then walk, all babies develop differently. Dont worry please xx
