I don't really feel this is the right place to post this, but I don't know where else to put it. But LO was diagnosed with a multicystic displastic kidney during pregnancy and now is 3 weeks old. Next week we will be going to children's hospital again for an u/s on the kidney and a VCUG. I am extremely worried about the VCUG as it sounds so painful and being so little I don't know how they will get her to hold still. I am afraid I'll have to sit there watching her cry in pain the whole time and if that's the case I may have to leave just OH in there with her as I don't want her to get more worked up from me crying too. I have read a little about the procedure but wanted to see if anyone has first hand experience?

Hi,

Just had a googled it and it looks the same or very similar to urodynamics which my daughter has had done. She has a single multicystic kidney with reflux.

The test sounds horrible but that's just because we'd expect it to hurt. My daughter didn't cry, we had to stop her wriggling whilst the catheter was put in but they're experts and do it really quickly, then it's taped in place so your lo just needs to keep still for each x ray.

I know how you feel I really dreaded it but it really wasn't as bad as we thought in the end, just take plenty of distractions with you.

Good luck xxx

Thank you for responding, our daughter has a multicystic displastic kidney, so it is probably a similar situation. I have been dreading this test all along since we found out she would have to have it when I was 18 weeks pregnant. She seems to be doing real well so I wish I could just tell them to do the ultrasound and skip it but I know it is best for her in the long run. I am glad to hear it wasn't as bad as you thought, I have been picturing her screaming her lungs out as they try to put the catheter in and then hold her down for the xrays. I will bring distractions but she doesn't seem interested in any of them at home so who knows if she will take better to them when we are there. I hope so.

I know the feeling, we discovered at my 20 week scan that my daughter would have loads of tests and I spent a long long time in tears over it. In our experience the younger that tests are done the better, my daughter had ultrasounds every week and she used to sleep through them or have a feed now she protests!!!

I think it's just that they don't like being held down but it's far better that you do it than the staff as it's less scary for your lo. Sometimes when my lo us upset at hospital I'm fighting back the tears but I know I can't show her that I'm upset too. She just gets extra cuddles and treats for being so good.

Where is she having the test done? We go to alder hey xx
