My oh takes a couple of weeks of over xmas and i would like to treat him to sky sports while he is of, he works so hard and deserves to watch what he enjoys... so i just want to order it over xmas... If i do this will they tie me into a contract or can i just cancel it once hes back at work in the new year??
any one done this before and managed to cancel it after a month?

My mum puts sky sports on when she wants just rings to put on/cancel x

Ask when you phone them. I know that with Sky themselves, you can put them on and also give your 31 day downgrade notice at the same time if you go through to downgrades straight away. Virgin shouldn't be able to contract you because you've added on Sky Sports but they might if you accept any special offers - they have to tell you either way.

you can add on the premium channels for a month at a time, I am putting the sports on soon for the darts and then cancel it again in the new year.

When you add it you have to keep it for a calander month, then you can cancel anytime after that x
