hi all
i am formula feeding my baby and was wondering at what age did u start giving water to them and how much?

any advice is much appriciated.

merry christmas to u all.

my health visitor has told me to give baby around 1oz of cooled boiled water everyday, he is 2months.

ya I dont think they get any water until they are a couple months old... here at least. Because apparently giving water can depress proper hunger.

I give Lexie it every other day. She only drinks about 1oz.

She hasn't poo'ed in 2 days, today is the 3rd day, so I've give her some today to try & soften her poo, cause she must be constipated. I was told only to give her water if her poo look's hard. But babies do get thirsty to, just like us. So every other day. It's doing her no harm.

I was wondering this too.
Aidan only cries when he's hungry tho, he never 'snacks' as though he was thirsty.

I was told that only to give water when the baby is over heated in summer months or sick when young. I guess they think formula or breast milk is enough as long as baby is wetting diapers.

I started giving LO water when she was around 2 months as this is when i stopped b/f.
I give her 2oz every day & mix gripe water in it so she drinks it. I find the best time to give it is after her nap as she seems to be thirsty then.

I didn't give Sam any water at all until he started solids at 5 months, and even then he hardly had any until he was on 3 meals a day at about 6 months. Now he has it with all his meals x

I don't really give Charlotte ANY water. I've tried but she just lets it all dribble out of her mouth and gives me a nasty look. I've tried mixing juice with water and she doesn't really like THAT either!

I tried Hebe with water on Xmas Eve....she pulled th funniest face!!

I guess everyone gets told different stuff by different people lol but my health visitor said as id stopped breastfeeding he was a little dehydrated, she felt this 'soft spot' on his head and apparently if its a little bit sunken it means they are dehydrated. I never knew that before untill she said...

Same here thats what im doing

I tried Liv with a little water when she was about 2 months, she looked at me like, 'Are you mad? Where's my milk?!!!!!' So I haven't bothered since!!

sinca jasmine is getting a bit of rice cereal in her milk I started giving her a bit of water... like .5 of an oz to start mixed with gripe water. Ive tried plain water and she wont drink it

I give ben the odd bit of water here and there, tho I haven't in a week or two. I don't think it does any harm getting them used to it.

Here we aren't suppose to give water until they are 6 months old. Before then their bodies cannot process plain water, and can die from water toxicity. They can also choke on plain water. We didn't start giving Hunter water until he was about 9 months old. Before then he just didn't need it, he stayed hyderated with his formula. At 9 months we started giving him a little in his sippy cup with his meals.

A baby (formula or breastfed) gets all the water they need from breastmilk or formula until atleast 6mo when they start solids, and even after that don't need much of anything else because most foods have alot of water in them. We started my son at 6mo just to get him used to a sippy because he was breastfed, never had a bottle, but he never drank more than probably 2-3oz at the very most, a week, until he was a year

A young baby, especially only a couple months old shouldn't be getting extra water, too much water is actually really bad and with the amount they get in other stuff they don't need it. Too much water is a big cause of seizures in infants.

sorry but i think that is rubbish.

Babies need water occasionally, and 0.5 or 1oz isnt gonna kill any baby from water toxicity.

The reason they say that is because at that age with the water in formula or breastmilk you can't ever really measure the amount they are actually getting so adding an ounce or 2 really could be too much for their tiny bodies. It's better to give them another ounce of formula or allow them to nurse if they seem thirsty

well i gave my son regular water, occasionally mixed with a small part apple juice to help with constipation, and hes still here
