Watford hospital - Anyone had there baby there or have any advice

Also the criteria for the birthing unit is things like can't have a high bmi, anything medically wrong with you, can't go there if you want an epidural, anything that's seriously wrong with you pregnancy and if baby is born before 37 weeks - but someone told me even if you have a high bmi etc if you really want your baby born on that unit you have every right to request it and have it booked in.

Thanks charliekeys - I would love to go in abc cos of the birthing pool but my bmi is too high  oh well

I only missed out last time as my iron count was too low, but absolutely my fault becasue i didnt take my iron pills.

In my maternity notes it gives you the criteria for booking in.

My friend's OH had their first at Watford and she is currently 20 weeks pg and booked in there again. They really recommend it. Said the facilities are excellent. I'm near Rayner's Lane and was old i could have Watford or Northwick Park when I do get pg with no.2 Northwick is brand new and the facilities are excellent there as well. I've heard more negative things about Northwick park and both are pretty equal. Go and ask to have a look around? Good Luck!!

My BMI isn't low this time around! I never got to lose my weight after having Stephen so my BMI is 33/34 (I think) but I will fight ot have this baby there if nothing is wrong! Obviously being pregnant first time round at the end my bmi went from 25 to 37 I think and they didn't stop me! But then again I find Watford Midwives don't tend to weigh you at ANY of your appts (thank god!!) I'd just see what your midwife says - if you really want the ABC unit then fight your case when it comes ot booking in :)

Do I actually have the right to push it with the midwife for abc but then them say oh you can't go in the pool incase you can't get back out - yes I have a high bmi but if I can myself out of my bath I think I will be fine :haha:

You won't be stopped going in the birthing pool! lol The only thing that will stop you is if the two pools are being used at the time! At the end of the day you're entitled to have the birth you want! :)

I 'think' the cut off is over 35 bmi

I couldbe wrong but i dont think the restriction is down to if you can get in or out of the pool, but more that there are 'apparently' more health risks during labour if you are overweight. Saying that, you can be pretty fit and healthy despite having a high BMI. Som people are just mde that way.

It cant hurt trying to push it, esp if you are otherwise well and no other complications.

I did use the pool when i gave birth there and it was ok, but personally i thought the only real positive was having your own toilet and shower. The rooms are not much bigger there than in the delivery ward.

I dont think i would ever try to use the birthing centre again if i wanted to give birth in hosp purely because i like to get home straight away. The ensuite wld be wasted!!

Oh thanks to both of you - my bmi was 39 when they weighed me at 6 weeks but otherwise I'm healthy and nothing else wrong with me which I could argue
I guessed I always thought you should do as they say instead of fight for what I want because they were the experts

yeh but why give birth somewehre you're not comfortable with when you know where you want! To me it's more stressful and detrimental to be somewhere you don't want to be then somewhere where you'll be comfortable and stress free! lol I did read on another post a few weeks back you can keep pestering them for the place where you want! :)

You never know we may be giving birth at the same time!! lol

It certainly wont hurt to ask and be a bit pushy :) The worst they can say is no!!

As for whether the hosp is bad or not.....I think our expectations of our labours are what make the experience good or bad. We all know what we want, and what we dont, but my advice is to go with the flow as until you are in that position and experiencing it, you wont know what is best for you be it pain relief or positions etc. And if things dont go to plan and epidural or csec is needed, dont feel like you have 'failed' because you havent followed your birth plan to the letter. No woman fails, whatever the journey to get to the end!!

Yep your both right - you know when you say push it with them when your booking in did you mean when I actually go into the hospital
Charlie - that would be funny if that happened as my edd was originally the 5th aug

I think you have an appt at 34 weeks and the midwife calls up where you've agreed on and says 'so and so is due this day, can you book them in please' and it's done :) But
BexyD is right - Don't make a step by step birth plan... it never goes liek that - just stick to the basic ones i.e. 'I'd like baby put on me after he/she is born, I'd like OH to cut the cord' etc - cause I put only G&A in my first one and hten I gave in and had Pethidine!Birth plans never get stuck too! :haha:

and you never know cause I had Stephen 5 days early, so this one could come earlier/yours comes late ha ha! We'd probs never even know!

thank you very much for the information - i think i will speak to my midwife - however they are all pro watford so i might just be talking to a brick wall

I can help out if you want to go to Luton & Dunstable instead. The other hospitals I don't know so much about, but I have the phone number of the L&D out of area maternity co-ordinator in my mobile ;-)

Things to remember if you want to change hospitals
1) It's NOT your midwife's permission you 'need'

Your midwife is part of a term attached to a hospital or sometimes group of hospitals by the time you're talking to a midwife you've almost certainly already been 'assigned' to a single hospital and your midwife can't send you anywhere else.

2) This does NOT mean it's too late to do anything about it!

We moved when I was pregnant with no. 2 and I didn't know that I didn't like the hospital until after I went on the tour which I wasn't allowed to do until after 32 weeks so I was a very last minute changer!

3) You 'need' to get your GP to refer you to the other hospital

I put 'need' in speech marks because as the out of area co-ordinator from Luton explained to me I'd made my decision and the paperwork was basically just squabbling about the bill. You go into labour you point your car at the hospital you want to go to, they'll sort out the bill afterwards if it comes to that!

Having said that I'd still advocate trying to sort out the paperwork. Just don't take the attitude that they're doing you a favour by co-operating - you're doing them a favour by letting them get the paperwork in order!

4) Be prepared

GP's vary when I changed at the last minute I had to wade through about a dozen bs reasons why it was impossible in 5 minutes! It helped a lot that I'd already been on the tour and spoken to the midwives and out of area co-ordinator!
They don't take people from here - yes they do
They used to but they don't any more - I spoke to the out of area co-ordinator this morning
It's too late there isn't time - you need to send them a fax, how long do you think that'll take?
We need to get permission from the PCT before we can send that fax - OK please do so then
They're all on holiday at this time of year - Really all of them for the whole 6 weeks? goodness they must get a lot of holiday - oh well please do your best.
You'll have to go to Luton for all your ante-natal care - OK (but I didn't have to)
etc. Looking back it seems funny but it wasn't at the time and it's easy to see how somebody would be bullied into just withdrawing the request

It was all sorted in less than a day:happydance:

...

Have to say that this is the exact opposite of my 2 births. Not once did i feel pressured to do anythign i didnt want - esp pain relief. I only had gas&air and meptid with my 1st and TENs with my 3rd. They certainl dont make you stay on the bed - in fact encourage other positions. I gave birth to my 3rd standing over the bed. The only medical intervention ive had the the jab to speed up the placenta due to anemia and blood loss, but i have requested this 2/3 times. Defo not forced on me. Not once was i monitored so that i couldnt move and have never had a drip.

I also dont think the criteria for the birthing centre is strict at all.

:winkwink: Well it's strict in as much as if you don't meet it you can't go there! But obviously lots of mums do get to go there, just out of curiosity were you in the delivery rooms or on the Midwife led floor?

What i meant was I dont think the criteria is difficult to meet. No under/overweight women, no low iron count, no history of repeatable complications, no multiple births, no breech babies, no inductions etc.......all pretty fair tbh. With any of those problems you are likely to need/ or have a higher chance of needing intervention. The delivery ward still allows and encourages you to be active, still allowed TENs, music, birthing ball. Anything pretty much except the pool.

My 1st child was born in the delivery room as birthing centre wasnt open back then, 2nd was in Midwife birthing centre and 3rd was in delivery suite. I wasnt able to have him in the birthing unit due to low iron count becaue i didnt take my pills and he was born 5 mins after arriving at the hosp, so would have been no time anyway.

I think i've got a pretty good all round experience of Wat Gen.

This baby will be born at home as my labours are pretty quick and i dont think i'll make it.

I'll be giving birth at Watford, haven't heard any bad stories from there :-/
Hello to fellow Herts ladies anyway *waves*
