Hi all, im not actually pregnant but didnt know where else on the site to post this so hoping you ladies can help :)

My sister is pregnant and we went for her 20 week scan this week. However baby is very stubborn and is lying in a strange way... it is lying so that on the scan all you can see is top of head and then occasionally some arms and legs, not the traditional side on view. On her notes it says that baby is in breech position. She had to be booked in to have another scan next week as sonographer couldnt get to babys spine to check it and he needs to be certain. Everything with baby is good so that is great news :) my sister really wants to know the sex of the baby so she can prepare and kind of bond knowing if its a boy or girl. The sonographer said its possibly a girl but obviously cant really tell. Sister thinks he is only saying this as he cant see any bits from that angle. Anyone had a stubborn baby that hasnt moved for scan? Also, is there any way of turning baby at this stage or is bubba just too small? And what is the possibility that baby will stay breech for birth as obviously she really doesnt want that and wants to avoid c section.

Thanks ladies :)

My LO was breech at my 22 week scan. They had the same problem trying to see the bottom of the spine and genitals. They had me roll onto my side and they tried to look but still couldn't get the angle, but when I rolled back onto my back she moved so they could complete the scan!

Other suggestions I've heard are drinking caffeine or something cold, or getting up and walking or jumping around a bit during the scan.

And just because the baby is breech now doesn't mean it will be for the birth. It'll probably flip round many times in the next 20 weeks!

I also had to go back for another scan at 20 weeks because she wasn't in the right place for them to see the spine. What I found was that whenever I was sat down for a bit she would roll onto her back and I could feel her kicking out the front, they needed her the other way up so what I did was I walked up and down the corridor for half an hour until they called me in so she wouldn't get comfy on her back! Sure enough when I went in she was lying with her back facing outwards and they could measure the spine.

Your sister might know what causes her baby to be in certain positions. But if she doesn't drinking cold water and giving baby some energy by eating can get them wriggling.

Don't worry about baby's position at this stage, baby has loads of room to move and is still rolling around and all over. After 33-34 weeks is when you might start thinking about baby's position and what you can do to encourage baby into the right position (according to my antenatal class) :)

Possibly putting something cold on your sisters belly could help? Most baby's don't like the cold for to long, they tend to move away or start attempting to kick it off (well mine does at least).
During my scan baby had her head up in my placenta, so we didn't get any kind of profile of her face, but she was in a great position for the tech to get her measurements. And she was very obvious that she was a girl, showed us several times when she would move as they were measuring other things, made us all laugh!

At my 20 weeks scan the tech commented on how much my LO was moving. I had a lot of hot sauce before I went for my scan since I heard it would help baby move and, well...I guess it worked? At one point she had me lay on my side so she could get baby to shift and see his heart chambers but that was all.

Can't hurt to give it a try :)

I ate Sour Patch Kids (because I was craving them, at 8am lol!) before my scan and baby was all over the place. But the cord was in the way :( Tech THINKS it's a girl. I have another scan on Monday tho

Drinking some iced coffee or a soda will get your LO moving!

Sugar.
Apple juice, a brownie, something sweet to make the baby dance, though not too much or it will be hard for the tech to get measurements or a clear look if baby won't stop moving long enough. Baby just needs to be awake and energized or they might otherwise be asleep with legs crossed.

Thanks for all your replies everyone! Will definitely be getting her to try some of these, all of them if she can! Hopefully baby won't be stubborn, and she can find out the sex :) will let you all know if baby allows us a good picture or not! Thanks so much xx
