Down regulation or suppressant (lupron or other similar meds) are meant to prevent your body from hyper stimulation by suppressing the hormones and also to prevent your body from prematurely ovulating, not to thin the lining. The lining does need to Thin and shed before your start stims but that is not different than any cycle when you shed the lining by having your period. The lining then builds up as it usually does and yes progesterone does increase the lining some but you usually don't start it until retrieval. Progesterone is also just a hormone that is necessary to prevent miscarriage. People who have recurrent miscarriages often are deficient in progesterone hormone. Since many ivf patients have never been pregnant before it is impossible to know if the patient is at risk of recurrent miscarriages so progesterone is given to eliminate that possibiblity.
