Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

TwoToGo - It looks like every few months you have a strange cycle that lasts longer than normal? I had this happen to me every once in a while before I took the vitex. Then it seemed like things were in perfect sync. I wonder if it is you being stressed or sick that is causing your cycles to get wonky? As Angel said, maybe it is IB? I would just wait it out and see what is going on.

Angel - YAY on being able to TTC. So have they figured out what the problem is yet? Seems to me that you are still awaiting some sort of an answer? GL!!!

You're right, I have been a bit stressed lately. I will just wait it out. Gonna have to. I have not tests, and cannot get to a store until sometime on Thursday. DH went to Missouri to pick up MIL, and my car is in the shop. The nearest store is 22 miles away. And I'm not walkin... :haha:

Phil- I'm very fortunate.. I have insurance that covers everything up to 50k... Now in emails he is stating we should discuss IUI and IVF alternatives.

Samsfan - welcome!! I'm Ali.. I just turned 40 and am trying to conceive as a straight single woman. It has not been easy! I had to start out with a FS as it is not easy to get pregnant as a single lady on your own. There is a couple JandK that have been using their own 'donor' to get pregnant, but unless you have someone willing to give you a sample, you pretty much have to rely on a FS and frozen donor sperm. I have done 3 IUIs and am in the middle of my second (and last) IVF. So that is my history. I am a wealth of knowledge on both IUI and IVF.

If your FS has said that everything is fine and you simply have unexplained infertility, I would ask him to give you your results. Pay particular attention to your FSH, LH, Estrogen and AMH, and anything else that presents as being out of the normal range. This page shows you what the levels should be and what they mean if they are out of range:

Thanks so much Jen... planning to go back to doc this week.

Never Give Up-

Thanks for responding. I got the results from all the initial tests. Doc says everything looks fine... He suggests IVF. We have been married 3 years. I don't know whether I should continue trying or start this process at 38... turning 39 soon.
Any thoughts?

Samsfan We were told the same thing by RE because every minute counts. I think you should try IVF. Did they say if husbands :spermy: analysis was good? In our case it wasnt so that is why they recommeded IVF asap. You will have a better success rate if you try soon rather than wait another year. I did my ivf's at 40 and 41 but had I known sooner there was a problem we would have done it sooner.

They said my husband was normal. He wants me to come in and discuss when we should start IVF. It's a difficult decision, because I know time is of the essence...however, I wish I could just try naturally. The infertility is unexplained. We have been married 3 years and never used birth control.

I'm very sorry for your miscarriage. I'm praying for you.

It is very hard. I put my career first and wanted to meet the right person and now it seems time is my enemy. I'm very nervous of the effects of IVF. I understand it is not easy on the body and I'm also nervous about the entire idea. I also feel I'm not even close to my ideal weight, but I know every month counts. The doctor gave me the speech.

I can't say I've taken my basal body temp in trying. Just used the charts and pee sticks.

Hi Samsfan, I feel where you are coming from. I sometimes feel like I "wasted" my fertile years with building a career, though I know that is not really true. I met my husband at 31 and now, three years later, we have not gotten pregnant. I just started Clomid. Like the other ladies on here, I wonder why your doctor went straight to IVF. It seems like he would want to try less invasive, cheaper options first, but I don't know. I hope that whatever you choose works out for you!

Angel: It's great to have you back! Have you had your day 21 progesterone tested? Will your doctor give you progesterone supplements? If you're clotting, have you been advised to take baby aspirin every day? I think that's a common treatment.

AFM, I had my D&C today. I'm hanging out on the couch now. I feel okay and am hoping that the pain meds have already worn off.

AFM - I'm officially 1dp5dt (6 dpo) and I'm more achy than anything. Try lying on your bed for 24 hours! You wake up with a sore back and just plain achy. I have a few cramps in my abdomen, but nothing too terrible. Just wishing I didn't feel so achy!

alicatt Yes bedrest sucks but you it is only for a short while. Hang in there :hugs: Getting lots of rest is the best thing for implantation :)
Are you officially on vacation tomorrow?

Coy- How are you? Am I understanding correctly that you are temping to not get pregnant? BBT is not a reliable way to predict that.

I'm working all next week :( and Christmas Eve, then I have until Jan 3rd off! I'll work from home on the 24th and the 4th so it will be a full 2 weeks at home! So I just need to get through next week! YAY!

I'm not feeling much of anything down there, just mild cramping. I'm so hopeful but also so scared that it won't work. EEK!

I have to work all next week including Christmas Eve too. Bah humbug! Stay positive babe and think nothing but positive thoughts and visualize a bfp, healthy ultrasounds and being in labor and holding your 2 babies!!! Get restful sleep and relax. It will happen. Those blastos are hi quality. What were the gradings last time? I'm glad you have family around you this time.

Afm, I vaginally temp, I think my temps were very erratic from the HSG and it threw everything off. By ewcm and cramping I think I ovu on cd 14 or earlier. I guess I will just wait and see. Does anyone know how they do the IUI? Do I have to take meds?

Hi Babywhisperer!
IUI is a good starting point for those with unexplained infertility and it seems to work well when the DH's sperm are low or compromised in some way.
When we went in, the procedure was fairly straightforward... I could have chosen to do the IUI without any medication, but because I was 40 at the time (41 now!) I wanted to give it the best chance possible (not waste anymore time!) and we decided to do a round of Clomid with the IUI attempt.
So.... I did the clomid from day 5-9 - I didn't like how I felt on it... I was really moody and felt uncomfortable in my skin... but I would do it again in a heartbeat because it may have helped me get my bfp! So on CD 12 or CD 13 I got a very strong positive OPK (I like the ones with the smiley face!) and the next day we went in for the IUI procedure. DH made his contribution in the morning and they take that, and do what I refer to as the 'scrub and shine'... they clean it up and concentrate it so you end up with the Best of the Best.... We went for lunch and came back in the afternoon for the procedure. It was a few minutes with the Nurse- she fed a catheter up into the uterus (not a problem for me- I don't even remember it being uncomfortable) and injected the Best of the Best of DH's :spermy: directly into my uterus and that was that!
Then we were in the TWW and 10 days later I got my first, really faint, BFP!

I've never done the IVF but I think, given the chance, I would always start with the IUI.... IVF sounds rough to me and the IUI is a walk in the park in comparison.... anyway, that's my 2 cents worth!!

Thank you for sharing this! I have my RE appt on Wed so I will find out about DHs SA and everything else. I am eagerly anticipating what she will say as far as my blood results and her suggestions for treatment. In the meantime cm is very creamy today and I had to wear a mini pad and change frequently today. I am either 4 or 6dpo today and while my temps dropped a lot today I did wake up 2 hrs earlier than the last 3 days.

Good Morning everyone!! I hope all of you are doing fantastic! I am still praying for all of you, hoping that those BFPs come really soon. I graduated this weekend and I promised to post pictures for y'all.
:)

Yeahhhhh! Jess we missed you so! Big congrats on the graduation you must feel so many emotions...relieved, proud, exited! What an amazing accomplishment. You go girl! :hugs:

Twotogo.... perhaps it's just a one-off as you have been feeling poorly? Or could it be an IB?

Ali... how's those eggs cooking honey? I hope you are resting!!!!!!

Angel - thanks for asking.. I'm doing well, 2dp5dt (7dpo) I started feeling a little off today, dizzy, nausea, cramping, fatigue, and I'm weepy too! I'm not sure how much of this is the progesterone shots or the first signs of a BFP? According to the IVF DPO schedule my blastocysts are hatching and implanting yesterday and today. They will continue to implant for 2-3 days, then they start producing HCG, so maybe by Saturday I'll be able to test?

Phil- I'm very fortunate.. I have insurance that covers everything up to 50k... Now in emails he is stating we should discuss IUI and IVF alternatives.

Samsfan - if you have 50K worth of ART health insurane? I wasted 3 months on IUI, but Phil got pregnant on her first IUI! I think it really depends on your fertility issues. The Dr will do a day 3 blood test to look at your hormone levels, he will do the femvue and he will do a SA (sperm count) on your DH. Once you get the results of this, you'll have a better idea of what your issues are. Also consider things like diet, alcohol, caffeine, allergies, nicotine, being over weight or under weight can cause you to have fertility issues.

We have also had some success with different supplements:
tapioca, royal jelly, maca root, CoQ10, for example. You might want to look into supplements for you and for your DH that aid in fertility. Make sure you fly these supplements by your FS before taking them.

Also a little known fact that I didn't even realize until just recently. You are actually fertile for the 4 days before your OPK and 1 day after. So just having sex on the day or 2 where you get your OPK is a good start, but it might not be enough? I would suggest pinpointing when you usually have your surge, and then next month starting 6-5 days before then and :sex: every other day until 2 days after your OPK. Then you know for sure that you have hit the window!!

BabyWhisperer - GL on Wednesday, I hope that your FS has a great plan for you and that you don't have any major hurdles to overcome with respect to your fertility!

You know, Ali, I was thinking about your IUI attempts.... and maybe it wasn't you? if your guy's :spermy: were not good for IVF, then maybe.... MAYBE.... that's why your IUI's didn't work??? anyways, just a thought....
I have a good feeling about this month for you, but if not, then perhaps another try with IUI with stellar :spermy: is the thing to try??

And maybe, too, do you think the fresh vs frozen has something to do with it too?? Just wondering....

You know I have thought that too. But how could 7 vials be bad? Or could it just be an incompatibility between me and the donor? IDK. Thing is that you can see by my much improved showing this time around, that I did much better with the smiley guy than I did with the pro golfer! 3 times better! It makes me mad that the sperm bank wouldn't give me a credit on any of it either. They said that it met their quality standards.. how is that possible when the embryos died between day 3 and 5? Oh well.. if this time I'm successful, then it will all be worth it!

When do you think I should start testing?

hmmm, well, I got my first super faint BFP at 10DPO .... your embies were 5 days old when they transferred them, yes? So I would say start testing at 5-7 days past Embie transfer??

See I was thinking it might have been the donor ESPECIALLY since you've done so well this time around.... the downside to IUI with the donor is that they can't see how the embies are doing when they are already inside you.... I don't know... it's just a thought... and as far as quality goes.... just because he met the 'standards' doesn't mean his swimmers are stellar.... right??
I'm super glad smiley guy seems to be doing so well!! If you do get your BFP then does that mean an August baby? (or Babies??) My birthday is in August!! Go Leos!!

I was looking at an IVF Due Date calculator. You can't count from your LMP (mine was Nov 15th), because I was suppressed for a while on BCPs. So they go by the date of your transfer, or the date of your retrieval. According to that if I am having a singleton, its due date will be Sept 2, 2013. If I'm having twins then their due date is August 18th. I think the 18th would make them a Leo, but if they are born much later than that I think they are a Virgo. I'd much rather have Leo's! So bring on the twins!

k, well, I was sort of feeling that way, crampy and achy, but like in a bloated way... or it turned out to be gas at any rate!

Alicatt- I'm so excited for you.... Praying!!!!!!

BTW.. my good good friend had triplets with IUI on her first try. They told her it would be tough to get pregnant. They are now 3 years old.

We did 3 days of blood tests... femvue, sono and sperm analysis... We discussed the femvue, sono and sperm analysis and we haven't discussed the blood tests. I'm going to follow up with an appointment.

I never knew that ovulation occurs up to 4 days before. I just started thinking that I may be misunderstanding when I ovulate. I thought it happens when you get positive OPK's and we have been holding off for a couple of days before the projected time. What is strange... my breasts get really sore after the surge. Don't know if that just started happening or if I just started realizing it because I am using OPKs. I get a sore throat and feel run down until my period. I sometimes hope that the soreness is a potential positive..but I come to learn that it is not.

I used to always get sore breasts after ovulation and before AF..... this time.... I had tender breasts after ovulation but only for a couple of days.... then nothing.... no tenderness at all.... UNTIL after my bfp! then they hurt like a SOB!!!
