Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

BabyWhisperer - wasn't your appt today? Or is it tomorrow? My brain is frazzled. Either way I hope it goes/went well!

Appt had to be cxld since the Dr went home with a bad stomach bug. I have rescheduled for tomorrow @ 4 if she is feeling better an in the office. I hope she is in tomorrow as I don't want to put this off until after the holiday...but whatever will be, will be. Thanks for checking in. How are you feeling??

Oh! I hope you get your appt tomorrow!

I just read that implantation cramps are often worse at night.. so I think my cramps are a good sign. It's been really bad the last 2 nights. Seems to set in around 6pm. I wonder why?

AFM- ladies, take a look at my chart! It is brief I know as I have just begun charting again but, uh, happenstance has it I could totally get preggo again :growlmad: I keep telling dh we have to be careful but that just seems to make him more, eh, you know.... Crud, I don't want to get preggo JUST yet...Oh, and will you look at the pic of my IC OPK from yesterday? What do you think? I had cramping pains like pms type yesterday evening, pretty sharp, so I am thinking ov pains. Damn and bd'ing is just perfect for it with bd on CD 7, 14, 16, 19, 21 :haha: Aaaaargh! wtf, right?!

OPK from yesterday

Looks like a surge is happening.

Yup appt is today at 4. Gulp. No clue what to expect. I hope it's not unexplained infertility and I hope she doesn't say go to IVF ASAP. I will let you all know.

Ali hang in there babe, you can test tomorrow and Saturday. Hope the pain and fatigue subside. You might need to get used to it though, all my friends have told me the 1st trimester is plagued with insane fatigue. Ugh. Say goodbye to your sleeping years.

Coy - definitely a surge! so be careful! :dohh:

I'm doing OK, just when I think the cramps are gone they come back! I don't get it. No fair!

BabyWhisperer - hope your appt goes well!

I'm gutted...AMH came back at .47 and she wanted to see 1.0. She said I have a 4% chance of conceiving naturally, 10% chance with clomid/IUI and likely after 3 rounds of Clomid/IUI I will need IVF anyway. Dh had 90million sperm, but 5% morphology...misshapen, but a lot of sperm as they look for 20million. So with the 2 factors even with IUI it may not work if fertilization is the issue. I don't know how to break this to dh, let alone the fact that we are not covered for IVF on his plan and 1 cycle is 14k.

Babywhisperer. I am sorry. :hugs: I know how you feel. Dh was also told he had poor sperm morphology. In our case I think it was more like 2%. With IVF they use ICSI and pick out the best sperm. Since they only need a few to fertilize They don't need alot of sperm. That is good they are offering to do clomid first. It regulates your ovulation. Re never offered us that option and several friends of mine over 40 have gotten pregnant with just clomid.

Is dh talking vitamins for fertility? Good news is sperm renews itself after as little as 3 months. Pycnogenol (maritime pine bark) helps sperm morphology. You can read about it here:
https://www.reproendo.com/html/pycnogenol-research-study.html

Vitamins that are very important are vit c, zinc (30mg), selenium. My dh loved taking hot showers and that is a no-no as it over-heats the scrotum and damages the :spermy:. He should boxers (not briefs) and loose-fitting pants. Exercise helps alot too. My hubby NEVER exercises :( He is an IT guy.

Babywhisperer- now you know though, so you and dh can work it out- you are strong! It'll work out, trust me! :hugs: You are strong and determined.....you got good eggs girls :winkwink: Did doc say the :spermy: were promising in IVF where they can sort o pic and choose?

Wow babywhisperer. I felt just like you did yesterday. TOTALLY GUTTED. Im new to this, so reading your post...I know exactly how you feel. I got the same stats from my doctor yestrday and i couldnt figure out what he was saying. So basically this is an uphill battle? I want to believe that a miracle will happen. Ive never even had an education in infertility.... Have you been through iui or ivf before?

Hang in there... It will happen.

Babywhisperer :hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:. I'm sorry the news wasn't more positive. I'm sure the other US ladies may have some suggestions regarding cover etc. Is there any way DH's cover can be changed and then you could claim off that? Even if there is a slight waiting period to endure?

I remember Ali mentioning before about arranging some drive to gather up funds when she too was struggling with this financial bombshell. I'm sure she can give you loads of advice.

Sorry I'm not much help, I just didnt want to read and run :hugs:

Thank you for your advice and suggestions. I guess we might try the clomid/iui route first and pray we are lucky.

Babywhisperer- did doc say you were NOT ov'ing? Why the clomid exactly? And maybe you will have great luck with IUI- I hope you are staying positive! :hugs: I am wondering how to improve morphology btw and in the meantime...

Hi ladies! Phew! Busy day today and yesterday, it seems Aeryn is constantly EATING, lol....I did shopping for our Christmas dinner, started my Oceanography course  ( this one's for fun :winkwink:), got wood for the stove for a few days, did a load of laundry, changed about 15 diapers  lol, and I had to strip the tub due to mildew

(yuk)

Then I have to go out to buy tools and mildew-resistant caulking. Then I caulked the entire thing- now waiting for it to dry. Ugh :haha:

And I am frustrated because I am doing it all one-handed around Aeryn and just as she falls asleep (great so I can work  ) one of the dd's runs in the room and starts yelling. And here I am shushing and they bat my shushing aside and yell LOUDER until Aeryn is awake. Then you know what they do?

They run.

Mini-rant, lol. I very often feel cornered with no time at all. I was so upset yesterday because we have a little tradition where we all watch the Polar Express as a family and I was really looking forward to it this year. Well dh demands that I be the one to re-do the tub (why me always???) plus care for babes while he and the dd's sit down and watch Polar Express w/o me :sad1: So yeah, I am a bit pissed. Plus I have to do all the shopping which means busting my a$$ because Aeryn will need to BF anytime. So my "down time" is when Aeryn eats and I use that to do my school- one-handed . Aaaaaaaarrrgh! :hissy: And I have 3 more loads of laundry to do, dishes the family has left me, and dinner to cook. Oh, AND my school assignment...

I'm done ranting now. I feel better lol!

Babywhisperer- now you know though, so you and dh can work it out- you are strong! It'll work out, trust me! :hugs: You are strong and determined.....you got good eggs girls :winkwink: Did doc say the :spermy: were promising in IVF where they can sort o pic and choose?

Egg reserve isn't good, .47 is not good. FSH is 7.9, but with estradiol of 68 it is probably suppressing that FSH number and it's really higher. I don't know about the sperm with iui or ivf other than they spin it and get the good ones to inseminate.

Babywhisperer- did doc say you were NOT ov'ing? Why the clomid exactly? And maybe you will have great luck with IUI- I hope you are staying positive! :hugs: I am wondering how to improve morphology btw and in the meantime...

She didn't say I m not oving, I get positive opks every month and ewcm and I feel cramping. They use clomid to stimulate the release of more than 1 egg for potential fertilization. I have no idea other than surgery if he has a dilated blood vessel, but that takes time and might not correct it.

I'm sorry your appt didn't go well either. At least we know what we are up against. I want to believe we might be lucky with iui. I have never had iui or ivf and did get pregnant in my 20's but had to terminate. I am 10yrs from that and the ahm/fsh numbers can change drastically in that time period.

skeptically I feel like they push for ivf since it is a big money maker, so I think we want to exhaust our chances with a 3 month trying period of climid and iui. If it doesn't work then we will try ivf.

Dh doesn't take any vitamins, just propecia for thinning hair, dexilant for heartburn. I will read up on morphology. I am sorry you have to deal with this issue too. Dh wears boxers and exercises and doesn't take too hot showers. He did get his ex gf pregnant a year before we met, so 3 yrs ago. So it can happen...hopefully iui is the way. What are you guys thinking of doing?

BabyWhisperer - I'm sorry that your news wasn't better. I can understand you being as you said.. gutted. It seems there is always something. .47 is better than .1! There are women out there that are breaking the odds and having babies with poor ovarian reserve. I am not familiar with the :spermy: issue as I basically had no choice but to use a donor and they are all screened for those issues before I even get to see it.

IMO I know it is rough to think about going right to IVF, but like Samsfan's FS said (and her AMH is right about where yours is). It is already diminished and time is of the essence. So if you are both wanting to have kids, then I'd jump right to IVF. It is expensive but the rate of return is much higher. My FS has programs for women that are 38 or younger where you pay 17K for up to 3 cycles and maybe even a FET cycle. I didn't qualify since I was 39 when I started on this road. So maybe there are options. I know that in the state NY that IVF is covered by insurance, so I think that the FS's that are in NY end up having lower costs and better options. So you might want to look at a FS that is in NY instead of NJ? Maybe I'm wrong? But I could has sworn that the girl on the IVF thread I'm on said that she had something like $50K to use on infertility and that it was mandated by the state. Also look up the micro flare or lupron flare protocol. That is the protocol they use on women with lower AMH. It has given many women a fighting chance and there are a few women on the IVF thread that I'm on that are currently pregnant after having done IVF with a low AMH. Now the sperm is another issue all together. I'm not sure if that is something they can improve with surgery or supplements or what. Definitely something to research! I do concur with Chantal that for IVF one of the options is something called ICSI where they take the sperm and select the good ones and inject them into the egg to fertilize it. I had this done due to it being frozen sperm, and of my 15 mature eggs had 13 fertilize. So it does work, and can give you a leg up! So don't feel so down, you are still in the race!

OK so I have some good news to share.. I almost didn't in light of BabyWhisperers not so good news, but I hope I cheered you up a little!

So my boss calls me this afternoon.. says I want to talk to you tonight when you are finished up for the day. I'm like.. why? Bear in mind he's supposed to be on vacation this week. So the fact he's calling me at all is odd. When I'm on vacation I DO NOT like thinking about work! He says.. well I finished your performance review and I want to get it done before the end of the year. Do you mind hanging around for a little while longer? So I say.. is it good news? He says.. Of Course! So at least then I can stop stressing. Long story short I got a 5 out of 5 performance wise, a new title.. SENIOR Technical Analyst and a 10% raise! :yipee: :happydance: :headspin: It will be effective in January! YAYAYAYAY! I will always want more $$, but this is pretty big considering they don't normally give more than 5%. He also discussed with me what career paths I want to take.. either Technical Lead for the team or get into Project Management. I'm leaning towards the technical lead as I think it would be more interesting. I'm not sure I want to step out of the technical side of things yet. He said I could think about that, and we'd set my goals so that my next review I would hopefully get one of those positions! I'm so happy!!! :yipee: I was also worried he would dock me for my long visit to Canada or my frequent absences trying to get pregnant but he didn't even mention those. So that was a relief! So there is my good news. It was even more bizarre that I wasn't even expecting it!

This is great advice and if you were here I'd give you a great bi hug..but not too tight to squish your implanting babies! I am in NY, 1 cycle is 14k with some sort of a discount, so it would normally be 26. My dh's insurance plan doesn't cover ivf. There is a plan called attain ivf that you can pay for a program, like 18k for 2 ivf trials and 2 fet or 24k for 3 ivf & 3 fet, the latter offers a 75% refund if you are unsuccessful.

Do they choose the best sperm for IUI?

I feel like I want to try iui/clomid and it is covered and will be less impact on me physically. I work on a trading desk and it will be hard to hide that I am doing this and I work with all men. I can do my every other day check ups in the city before work, but side effects will be hard to hide. I also don't know if we are ready for the cost of twins here as daycare/nannies are very $$.

I will look into the ivf thread. Just digesting this. Will 3 mos really be a huge time period to try iui and not ivf right away?

The clomid/IUI route is cheap and it is something to do providing you have a decent AMH. What you will do is take clomid from days 5-9 of your cycle or some take it 2-7 (it varies by Dr). During those days you will feel pretty crappy. Just not yourself, hotflashes, irritable, etc. It goes away as soon as you stop taking it so that is the good news. Then they will monitor you via U/S until they see that you are ready to ovulate, and they will probably give you a trigger. Hopefully you have 2-3 follicles that are ready to go, and all 3 will ovulate. So instead of 1 egg being released the hope is you will have 2-3 eggs. Then they will take your DH's sperm and spin it, this is to get all the bad sperm out and also the seminal fluid. This is simply done in a centrifuge, and what is left is the live sperm only. Then they feed that into your uterus and deposit them there. Think of an IUI as skipping the :sex: part where the :spermy: are deposited in the vagina and have to make their way to the uterus and then up the tubes to the egg. In an IUI they are deposited in the uterus but they still have to make their way up the tubes to the egg. So it is ultimately up to you whether you want to try the IUI route. If I were to do it, I would suggest skipping the clomid and going right to injectibles with an IUI. They did that with me when I was in Canada. I took gonal F and Menopur and made 5-7 follicles (it was a lower dose than for IVF) and then they did the trigger and IUI. So that might be a better use of your IUIs if you choose to go that route.

sorry to tell you this Babywhisperer but propecia adversly affects sperm quality. Did he recently start using this drug for thinning hair? They should write the side effects on the box. Dh bought some otc but we threw it out after asking the doctor if it would have side effects.

Congrats on your promotion Ali!! :wohoo:!! What a way to start the new year!! :happydance: Dh got a job offer at a new place yesterday and at first he was worried they would counter offer the salary he asked for but they didnt. They accepted so he will be starting mid January! His present job is so stressful as he is the only systems admin there and he's always working late (like tonight) and many weekends.

Hi ladies!

Coy you are supermom! :hugs: I would be pissed off too! No fair everyone watching the movie except you. Dh should have helped you so you would have time to relax too. You never stop. Men take women for granted when they don't complain. You must put your foot down! He could do the dishes. You do way more than he does. That is just not fair!! Explain to Dh that when he takes you for granted and the kids see this they take you for granted too. :( When my hubby is watching football and I have been cooking and cleaning I have to stop and realize hey I am the only one working here and I make him get off his lazy butt and help me! lol

This is amazing news and you deserve it...and deserve to share it with us!!! You have more than earned it and they know it. The acknowledgement is long overdue and I am so happy for you. It must feel awesome. This is the first of many good things that you will find out this month. I can just feel it!!
