Welcome to 'Trying To Conceive Over 35'

Yikes! I have a bunch of emergencies at work, and you all get very chatty!

JenSC - good to hear from you! Don't forget you want to :sex: 4 days before you get a positive OPK, and 2 days after (every other day). So if you are starting to see the stick darken then you should start having :sex: every other day! Also, clomid is not meant to be an every month thing, there is an increased risk of certain cancers for those women using it more than 3-4 months in a row. So you need to get your DH on board and do whatever you need to do to get him to do his part. Some FS's will allow you to go a few months more, but there are studies that show it does increase your risk of ovarian cancer (don't quote me on the type, but I think its ovarian).
Hi Ali,
Yes, I know Clomid is a short term thing- I think I would only be on it two more months (I have been on 50 mg and would increase to 100mg per the doctors plan) but I think I am going to give it up. My husband has horrible allergies and could only manage sex on the day of the opk+. He was working long hours leading up to it, and the day after the positive, we tried to have sex and he kept losing his erection and couldn't finish. (I don't know if I am allowed to say that- you all use the "BD" euphemism, but I figure it is only adults here.)

I think we are done with this. I am frustrated by my husband's attitude that we have lots of time. In my opinion, we do not.

It can be really tough to continue to push forward toward something when your spouse is mybe not being (or seeming) as serious? I know it can be super difficult. Try not to give up yet! How old are you? I will be 38 in April and told my dh if we seriously thought we would want more children after this then we should start very soon. I know up into 45 and etc is still not too old imho....it all depends on health according to my doctor. He says if you are healthy then your eggs are healthy  Plus, I bet if your dh is working very long hours he may just be exhausted and that is physically tough for a man to, um, maintain at the appropriate moments  not sure what the BNB euphemism is either :haha: But it can be a serious issue when ttc. Try to hang in there- it only takes once timed right, maybe try to bd while you are still surging before the positive takes place? Your odds of having a dd increase with that from what I hear but  We never especially cared but we'd love to have a little boy too! Dh is (I think) trying to get me preggo again right away :growlmad: lol!

How long have you been on clomid? I used it once also. Do you have reg cycles?

Hi Coy, thanks for the reply. I read your post about hair styles. You remind me so much of someone, and I am trying to think of who, because that could be whose hair you would want to duplicate. You look a lot like Cate Blanchett, but there is someone else....

I am 35 and 6 months. My husband has really severe allergies, and when he is sick, it impacts the plumbing. This is my second month on Clomid, and both months he has really tried, but not been able to do as much as I would like. Last month we had sex the day before the opk+ and then two days after it. This month we did on the day of the opk+ but then not again. He tried the next day, but wasn't able to finish. (He would be SO thrilled that I am sharing this with everyone ). It is really important to him to have children, he just seems to think we can take our time. I have told him repeatedly that he is not correct, but he is unmoved. Growl! My cycles are super regular, and always have been, but I was not ovulating before the Clomid (a lot of people believe that if you have regular periods, you are ovulating, and while it is a good indicator, many women have regular anovulatory cycles as I do.)

Well you are both right and wrong! I kill myself sometimes!

Jen.. clomid can work, Phil is living proof! But as Coy said timing is everything. Sounds to me like you need to work with your DH to get his allergies in control. It's winter! What is he allergic to? Secondly there are other non-drugs that you can try that will help you ovulate. I wonder if you have PCOS? There is a supplement called vitex or chasteberry or angus cactus (all the same plant) just different names that can help women ovulate. You could try that? Auto-immune issues can cause infertility in both men and women, so get your DH to deal with his allergies! GL!

We are both right and wrong? lol! I know, right? This ttc thing can be a "boggle" at best...:haha:

How's the training going?

Grey eyes-- How about these?

Ohh.. sexy!

I've always tried for the Jennifer Anniston look..for me or maybe the Reece Whitherspoon look?

My hair is mega straight and fine, not much you can do with it, just do long layers or frame your face. I go between growing my bangs out to cutting them back as soon as they are grown out! HAHA!

I like the up close picture! Ohh la la!

AFM - migraine and hiccups! Makes typing on my cell very challenging!
I'm in bed.. night all!

No, I don't have PCOS. The one symptom of PCOS that all women with the disease have is irregular cycles. According to both my research and my doctor, if you have regular cycles (as I do), you do not have PCOS. I did try vitex for a while, though I am not a believer in the so-called natural remedies. It didn't work. My husband is allergic to everything! Well, not really, but Tampa is NOT the place for him. He is allergic to pollen and that is really high here even in winter. He is also allergic to wheat, lactose intolerant, and has other fun food issues. He has seen tons of doctors for his whole life and they cannot fix it. I would like him to have his sperm checked, but since I was not ovulating, I feel we have found the problem. The odds that both of us are infertile seem slim to me. I would not be willing to use donor sperm anyway, so I don't know there is a lot of point to a sperm check, except putting my mind at ease. Plus, it is not like it is hard for him! I wish any of the tests I have been through in my life involved orgasm!

Ladies can someone look at my chart? I was too tired to get groovy yesterday. Im too tired most of the week. Maybe, that is my problem I think my surge is creaping up on me but I cant tell.

Just putting my 2 cents worth in regarding sperm assessment.... in doing the check, it gives you information and may help direct you towards the best option for increasing your odds. With the amount of allergies and health issues your husband has, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that his sperm is not optimum. He might not be "infertile" but if the quality or quantity is compromised, that is good information to have. Since sperm can change quickly, if it isn't optimum, then it might be a really easy fix and increase your chances of being successful faster. The other thing to consider is that procedures such as IUI help increase the chances for success in couples where there are some sperm issues and that is all that is needed. IMHO by not looking at all the moving parts in trying to conceive you end up making decisions which are not informed and based on only partial information. Having been on the ttc rollercoaster myself, and every month feeling so disappointed and awful when AF came around.... I just don't understand not wanting to have a complete picture of what's going on with your efforts at trying to conceive.... it takes two to tango and if only one partner is dancing then it doesn't work...

AFM- still pregnant! No baby yet! but lots of stronger, rhythmic pressure.... so I think it won't be long!

PCOS is not just irregular cycles, I have regular cycles and ovulate but still have PCOS. I also have friends that are really skinny and have PCOS. It is a syndrome that is mis-named. The way that Dr's determine if you have PCOS is by your hormone levels, insulin resistance, small cysts on your ovary and anovulation. You don't have to have all of those things to have PCOS. I had normal LH and FSH (which is why I was ovulating) but elevated androgen (male hormone), mild insulin resistance and some small cysts but not as many as most people with PCOS. It is a difficult syndrome to diagnose, but clomid and vitex, metformin (an insulin resistance drug) and a few others can help you ovulate. I was just throwing out ideas as to how you could continue to ovulate without having to take clomid. That is really a bugger that your DH has so many allergies! I didn't realize you lived so close! I'm on the east coast of FL. No wonder he has allergies at this time of the year! I guess I assumed that you were living in a northern climate. I too have fairly severe allergies to dust mites and queen palm, and guess what tree I have outside my bedroom window? Yep a queen palm! I went to see a highly recommended ENT Dr and he recommended some work on my nasal passages. He opened up my deviated septum, did something with my turbinoids and something with the sinus cavities up above your eyes. He also removed my uvula (the thing hanging at the back of your throat). The uvula was for sleep apnea, but the rest was due to my annoying allergies and just feeling horrible all the time. That was 2 years ago. Since then I have felt like a million bucks! Sure I still have to take allergy medications on occasion, but 90% of the time I feel great! Plus I haven't had a cold or flu since then. The removal of my uvula was perhaps the most horrible surgery I have ever had and while I am glad it is gone (no sleep apnea) it was the most painful thing I have ever done. Also, moving to a gluten free diet is known to improve fertility, I have done so, and while I didn't get pregnant last cycle, I do feel so much better! Prior to going GF I felt like I had junk in my pipes, now I'm more regular and it feels like my abdomen is less bloated. I just feel better in general. So maybe working together on improving your ovulation and getting your DH to address his allergies so he feels better will help you in making a baby? If there is one thing I know, it's that infertility can be caused by so many different things, and it is a crap shoot at best. So if you can rule out each issue, then maybe you can be successful!

Ladies can someone look at my chart? I was too tired to get groovy yesterday. Im too tired most of the week. Maybe, that is my problem I think my surge is creaping up on me but I cant tell.

I would say that you are getting there just based on your CD. So it looks like you should start trying!

How did your scan go? Did you already say? My brain has been a little out of it lately.

ARGH... So this morning I have the opportunity to sleep in. Something I was really looking forward to. The garbage men come on Mon and Thurs, so those are bad mornings to try to sleep in. I even thought, well the gardeners were here last Thursday (the last morning of my vacation when I could sleep in). So I figured, :nope: they wouldn't come this morning. I was so happy to just catch up on some sleep. But no :growlmad: the gardeners came this morning! :saywhat: I have no idea why? They didn't come the entire time my family was here for the holidays (about 13 days) but now they come 2 times in a week? I tell you they are out to sabotage me!
Normally I don't need to sleep so much, but after IVF I am plagued with a lot of migraines. The FS said it is caused by the estrogen levels dropping back to normal range. In a normal cycle your estrogen peaks around ovulation, and then slowly starts to drop, until you implant, and then it starts to rise again. Well during your normal cycle a peak is somewhere between 200 and 600. In an IVF cycle your estrogen can go up to 7000! Mine this last cycle only went up to about 4000, but then they had me on estrogen patches until I had my negative BETA. So once you stop taking those patches your body is slowly but surely getting back to normal, and with it comes daily migraines. It just knocks the crap out of me. Couple that with 2 people still being on vacation, and me training a noobie, but still needing to get my own work done, and you have a recipe for disaster! ARGH. Well it is 11:30 here, I need to jump in the shower and get ready for work at noon. At least I had the morning off to get a few things done, even if it wasn't sleep !

Coy - Happy Hump Day! So what are you going to do with your hair?

Phil - so isn't today the day where you are going to try some natural method of inducing? Best of luck!

Everyone else - :hi:

Ali You are right. Dh snores like a freight train and if I wake up I cant go back to sleep. I just gently roll him on his side. I tried ear plugs but the only ones that don't hurt are the waxy ones and they cause build up in my ears  He would turn on the light when he came to bed after me and that woke me. I usually feel around in the dark if I get up during the night. Well last night I turn a night light on and I continued sleeping so that worked :) The tay-sachs etc that was the saliva test. Yours are probably new ones. I am starting to see that the doctors are better in Canada. Two of my cousins in Ottawa were diagnosed with auto-immune diseases and their doctors are so good at helping them manage their pain. One cousin has lupus and the other syrogen's. They have alot of the same symptoms I have but are 10 and 12 years older than me. They said their symptoms intensified as they got older.

Coy How are you today? Yes I came here thinking the same thing that Phil had her baby.

Philomena we are all thinking of you and your precious baby girl. :hugs:

Interesting about the Tay Sachs - that is something that they determined I didn't need to have tested. I guess it is only recommended for people of French Canadian or Jewish descent? How they would know I'm not either I do not know, especially since I am Canadian and was adopted? HMMM

I did do a DNA test with ancestry.com and found out that I am 26% Scandinavian, 68% British Isles, and 6% unknown. How can I have 6% unknown? I have no idea. Am I an alien?

Coy - :hi: hope you are having a good day!

Phil - baby news? anxiously awaiting an update!!!

AFM - ninja :ninja: today and training a noobie. So that is fun! He is in a new employee type training session right now, so I am free for a bit. It is painful training new people, but I know that in time it will be a great help. Short term pain for long term gain!

I have just been reading all the posts I missed yesterday. You ladies were all very chatty. I was chatting with my Mom on skype for 3 hours.

Ali - I am french-canadian that's why they tested for tay-sachs. I am adopted too. That's why they can't go on family history for my auto-immune issues. My Mom died at age 45 and she had jaundice as a teen and always had a bad liver. My liver is fine. I did inherit her dysmenorrhoea which used to keep her in bed for 2 days. They didnt know about primrose oil and other herbs back then. Sorry that the gardener messed up your sleep-in day. That used to happen to me in Barbados. I had one day off ever 10 day and most times the gardener would be weed-wacking next to my bedroom window and he liked to start at 6 am before the sun got too strong.

You should try magnesium calm for your migraines? It is a powder you can dissolve in water.

Then I felt so sleepy had a nap before the refinance guy came by and then went to bed very early. I don't know why I am so sleepy again today. I woke up at 7:30 and when back to sleep. I am still tired, crazy.

AFM- still pregnant! No baby yet! but lots of stronger, rhythmic pressure.... so I think it won't be long!

Philomena I hope today is the day for baby girl to make an appearance into the world! You have been so patiently waiting!

Coy- I personally love long hair so I think your hip length hair is awesome. Maybe you could trim it but not really cut the length my putting layers like the photo Ali posted. Your grey eyes really pop with the dark hair. Love it!
I had my hair like the photo Ali posted for a couple years till I cut it into a bob for my 40th birthday and lightened it. I missed the long hair so let it grow back only barley trimming it every six months and darkened it back to my natural colour. My profile pic was taken on my 41st birthday. It has stayed the same though it was curled in the photo. It is naturally dead straight.

I just don't understand not wanting to have a complete picture of what's going on with your efforts at trying to conceive.... it takes two to tango and if only one partner is dancing then it doesn't work...[/QUOTE]

I have a doctor that I love, whom I consult with on what tests are needed, and she has not recommended any type of sperm check at this point. I was not ovulating, and we both feel that addressing that problem is a good first step. I am not willing to try IUI or any other ART, so I am good with what we are doing. If Clomid works, great. If it doesn't, it doesn't.
