I've been wracking my brains to think of ways in which I can make a little extra money, but the only skill I have is in writing. So I was wondering if there's a market out there for personalised rhymes and poems? Would you pay money to have a poem written for a loved one? If so what would you be willing to pay? How many verses would you want? Would you rather funny/sentimental/soppy? Who would you want it for? what would you do with it?

What about a short story for a child?

Would you be willing to be a guinea pig for me to practice on lol?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

personalised stories with xmas coming up is a great idea x

But would people be ok with just being emailed a story, or would they want it actually in book format with pictures etc?

My previous money making idea has gone down the pan and I was actually thinking of doing personalised stories for christmas. But if you wanted to do poems they would sell quite well round xmas and especially valentines day

Yes, they def would. You wouldn't *need* to do a book but itd be good if you knew someone who is a good drawer. I have this book from when i was little about a christmas story and its personalised but its just a standard story IYKWIM? It would be much better if it was more personal.

You could maybe ask the person to send a picture of their LO and then get someone who you know is good a Photoshop to do some pictures with them on, you can get a cheap photobook online and put the story and pictures in there?

Ok, does anyone fancy a freebee? Just to make sure that I can do it and that people would be happy with it. You would need to be ok with me posting it on here for comments though. And it would just be the story or the poem, not any pics atm.

Am off to google free pics/illustrations and photobooks lol

I would if no one already has :)

could you not do a personalised letter from santa on the computer, or even by hand, and post it to the children? i think out goings would be low and you could charge £2.50 a letter, which is a lot cheaper than the big companies, who send bog standard ones, and you could write the letter espically for that child

i have made myself an idea now too :D

i have seen a few websites that do them but they cost the earth.......

Best of luck with that but the fact is the amount of time and effort you'll put into it isn't going to pay off.
In a down economy people aren't going to pay for stuff like that. They'll write themselves and even if it's not the best writing in the world, they can always say "well I wrote it so it came from the heart"

If you're into writing, why not try to be an English tutor? Put flyers up and see what happens. You could get a bunch of people wanting your help for their children.

Could you de reviews for websites? We employ a freelance writer to do descriptions for our perfumes and pay her a silly amount per description..and it prob takes her 10mins to do each one lol.
Or theres online places where you can get paid for just writing posts etc! x

Oooh, can you tell me where these places are?

Lots of greetings card companies employ writers to come up with the little verses inside the cards - might be worth looking into.

you may find a couple that have been used by others that can vouch for them or even get other ideas...x

i know the nspcc does them for a donation

Thats where i get mine from for the children in the family each year.

I think there is a market for it most definatley, but its certainley not going to make you rich hun :)

there's plenty of places to make money writing content online. Spend a day googling and you'll find lots more than I know of I'm sure.

Obviously I don't know your level of expertise but if you can boast some professional qualifications then why not try e-lance.

The other place I'd suggest is Digital Point forums. There you will find plenty of people looking for content to be written for their websites. People look for posts for their blogs, descriptions for their products, articles, press releases and just about everything else you can think of.

There's also plenty of writers already on there already though which means you don't get paid huge amounts. That said for a lot of your competition English isn't their first language and some of the quality is terrible.

I paid some guy in Indonesia to write some stuff for me. I paid $5 per 500 word article. I was happy enough with what he came up with, I'm more interested in the link than the content, but is was a load of old cobblers - https://www.ideamarketers.com/?articleid=1446797 - (it's funny reading it)

Anyway, you would obviulsy be able to charge more than that and there are also people who are looking for more serious, sensible stuff than what I was looking for.

hope that helps
