What is classed as a high fasting reading in GD?

I am in the uk and testing my blood as I refused a GTT due to sickness.

In the 4 weeks I have been testing my blood only 5 of my fasting reads have been 5.5 or below which is what they told me was the target. Most days they are over 6. I eat around 19:30 and have nothing else before testing, not even a drink.

Will they say that these are really high and intervene?

I was told that my fasting levels need to be between 4 and 6. I don't know whether that means they will intervene though. My diabetic nurse said to call them if my levels seemed to go too high more than one time as hey would need to look at putting me on insulin. It seems to vary from one place to the next even in the UK. Sorry if that's not much help! Hope it all works out. The one thing I have found reassuring though is that me and baby have been monitored so closely since being told I have GD.

Good luck to you.

Thank you, I have got clinic next week so will see what they say then x

My doctor has me fax my logs in weekly and reviews them. Are you on insulin?

No, diet 'controlled' at the mo.

Haha! Like the 'controlled'! I notice my morning levels are higher if I've had a poor nights sleep. It then sets me up for a day of not great readings. I have had a few higher readings. Not usually over the guidelines but pushing the limits, and my diabetic nurse has been happy. You should hopefully feel a bit better about it all once you've been to the clinic x

I am in the US, and the fasting targets seem to be tighter here: usually below 90-95, which is 5.0-5.3 in units that you use in the UK. Anything higher than 105 (5.9) means that insulin or glyburide is required.
When do you test in the morning? Maybe the period of fasting is too long? I always have to have a protein snack before going to bed (like a piece of chicken!), then my morning numbers are satisfactory... My endo said that fasting between 6 and 8 hours is the best for most patients.

In New Zealand, fasting had to be below 5.0, I had gestational diabetes with my daughter. My fasting was usually 3.5 - 4.8 after not eating for 12 hours.

I test as soon as I get out of bed (well once I have stopped being sick lol), my fasting period is less than 12 hours but I can't shorten it anymore because of my sickness. If I eat too close to bedtime I would be ill all night and can't eat as soon as I get up because I am so sick x

My morning sickness has come back, most mornings I get up and throw up..then if I test my numbers are usually very close to or over my 5.9 fasting/pre-meal limit..I spoke to the Diabetic MW who said it could be the throwing up that makes my numbers go high (?)..they gave me another 10 days to try and get them under control or it was on to meds..luckily they seem to be settling now though. Seems that the limits vary in UK..I have to be 5.9< before meals and in morning and 7.9< 1hr after eating..as you have a cut off of 5.5 fasting and are hitting 6 I would say you need to speak to someone ASAP..I was told more than 3 highs then I needed to be seen ASAP, if you have had 23 highs and 5 normals then its best to get checked now IMO
