Hi ladies,

I hope you don't mind me joining you for a couple of questions?!

I'm due in June and planning on BF. I'm at the stage where I am writing a list of all the things I need buy and going to start shopping very soon.

I plan on BF, but (if all goes well) once BF is established, I would like to express so that DH gets to have a go at feeding and I get what I'm sure will be much needed sleep.

I guess in that case I need a breast pump - any ideas on best types etc. The thing I'm confused about is bottles and sterilizer. Are there better bottles for combining with BF? and what size sterilizer should I get?

xx

hey honey. Ive got the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles and on the few occasions Gabriella has had a bottle of EBM she has taken them great. I also have the Tommee Tippee closer to nature steriliser too, the microwave one and its brill :D really easy to use and only takes 6 minutes to do a full load. i have that make of breast pump but only pump on the odd occasion and find it much easier and comfier to do it by hand.

xx

Thanks Dom,

I thought that the closer to nature bottles looked quite good!

we have the doctor brown bottles which are great especially if you have a colicy/windy baby like ours, I too bought the manual TT pump but I couldn't get anything out, I then borrowed an Avent electrical one off a friend and it's fab x

I use the tommee tippee closer to nature bottles and microwave steam steriliser. I also use their electric pump which is great! LO has a bottle of expressed every night. I normally express once or twice a day to get enough though! It is a good idea to start introducing a bottle of EBM reasonably early (5-6 weeks) and then give one regularly so they get used to swapping between breast and bottle. Works like a charm though!

Thanks for the advice honey, I will bear that in mind.

I am the first of my close friends to bf so don't have anyone to go to for hands on advice.

The First Years Breastflow bottles are highly recommended for breastfed babies as they're designed to require the same sucking action your LO uses to get milk from the breast. I use them the few times I've had my DH feed him and they work a charm.

I tried the TT CTN ones & thought that even the slow flow was too fast for him but I am happy with the time it takes him to finish on the Breastflow bottles and so is he. He seems calmer & to enjoy it a lot more and not frantic at getting so much so fast like he was getting with other bottles.

Hi JadeyB
I'd recommend getting an electric pump (I've got a Medela one for this time round, but used a hospital one which I was leant when I had Poppy). Just so much quicker than a manual I found.

We also used the CTN bottles and Poppy was great at taking EBM in them until she got to about 4 months when she refused and wouldn't take a bottle at all.

I got a free Breastflow bottle a while ago and am hoping to try that with the new baby, have heard great things about them. Not sure if you have a TK Max near you but they have them in packs there, much cheaper than in the normal shops.

Abby was the same with CTN, it was really frustrating as I did enjoy the odd lie in and now we are struggling to get her to take milk by any other means and I have to go back to work soon!

Looking at the breastflow ones, I might give them a try next time.

Hi,
I bought a pack from Mothercare last week, it was a Phillips Avent electric pump, 3 bottles, 2 teats, 200 breast pads, and a tube of nipple cream - it should have been £110, but was reduced to £55.
I'm only 12 weeks, but I can't resist a bargain!
xx

Just in case you are also thinking of other things to buy definately get some Lansinoh nipple cream. Really is good stuff - bit pricey but lasts for ages.

Wow what a bargain hon.

I will try mothercare online, we don't have a mothercare here anymore :-(

Thanks for the advice hon, I was going to ask what type of nipple cream is best. Probably a stupid question, but is it ok for baby get some in their mouth or do you put it on and then somehow wash it off before feeding. xx

They are all perfectly safe. But I tended not to put it on too soon before a feed as she slipped off!

If you can find a health store, you will get a non branded lanolin cream cheaper than lasinoh.

I would personally pay the extra for the Lansinoh since a tube lasts a good long while and you only need to use a little bit at a time since Lansinoh is purified and has no chemical/pesticide residue or other additives and impurities that can't be guaranteed in an off brand.

It may not matter at all, but when it comes to your little one, why risk it over saving a few dollars?
