What to call Grandparents?

This is the first grandchild for my MIL, but her husband (my husband's stepdad) is already a grandfather, so has a name already. My parents are going to be grandparents for the first time with this baby though. The way we've got around it is to let the grandparents decided themselves.

If they don't like the name we choose for them; they're lumbered with it for years, and possibly with loads more grandchildren calling them it. I think it's important that they have the decision; I would like to have the final say on what I was referred to if it was me

Trouble is, my dad's saying he doesn't want to be called anything with the word "grand" in it  He's suggested "Sir". He doesn't like to be reminded that he's getting older :haha:

This is a hard one for us as well, it's the first grandchild for both sets of future grandparents. My mum wants to be Grandma, but we know OH's mum will wanna be grandma as well so duno wat 2 do bowt that?? I wish one of them would go for nanna. My step dad will be Grampy Andy lol, guessing both our dads will wana jst be grandad? and then i hav no idea wat my step mum will b if she'll even want a name. dnt u just love modern families arrrgh!! x

My sister and brother battled this one out for me.

My mom was called grammy and her significant other was Poppy Ron, my dad was Poppy Jay (to my sister's kids) and Grandpa(to my brothers kids) and grandma Corliss.

It shouldn't matter and it will come out once the child is born they will start to identify with them in their own way.

LOL my DD called my dad "dad" for the first two years of her life as that's what I called him so she thought that was his name. LOL she now calls him Poppy sometimes adding the Jay to it but mostly not and even sometimes calls him grandpa

Thanks everyone for your input.
I had tried asking my Mum but she can't decide. OH's parents are Nanny & Ga, I would like my mum and dad to be Nannie and Grandad coz that's what I called my Mums parents who I was very close to and I think it would be an honour to pass that on. But...that makes my Mum worry as she knows how close we were and she's worried she won't live up to the name!! As well as worrying that having a Nanny and a Nannie might be too complex. I am thinking adding a name or initial after it may be the way to go.
I will let her know what you guys have all said and see what she thinks.
Thanks again all.

My mom is Nana...her husband is Dave. My dad died when I was a child, so the kids just call her husband Dave...although "Nono" was used for a bit.

My MIL is "grandma" (the bitch is what I call her). My step-MIL is "Nana-DeeDee", and my FIL is "grandpa".

Both of our parents have grandkids. Mystep son calls his mom's parents grandma & grandpa, my husbands mom grandma constance and my parents grandma jeanette and grandpa Lyle.

My sisters duaghters call my parents grandma & grandpa and her husbands parents "nana" & "papaw"

Hope this helps

Since this is my Parents 1st Grandchild and my OH's parents 7th Grandchild we made the decision that my parents get '1st dibs' I knew they would want Nana and Papa anyway! haha.

My OH's parents want Pop for FIL and no idea what MIL wants to be called. I don't care what anyone wants to be called as long as it isn't completely ridiculous :D .

see what each grandparent prefers I guess. My side will be called nanny and grandad. I think grandpa sounds really old!
But my hubbys side are Italian so they will be Nonna and Nonno so easy for us I guess.
I suppose there is also Gramps, Granni, Nan???

Both my mum and my inlaws have grandchildren already so their names have already been chosen, but I am pretty sure it was them that chose it, not my siblings/SIL.
However, my MIL is known as Nanny and I always preferred my grandma to my nan, I think Nanny is not as nice, so once our little boy is here I think we might try and introduce nanna as I think that's nicer!

My mil has already referred to herself as Grandma Joan (this will be her first grandchild) which works for me. My parents are already called Grandma and Grandpa by the other grandchildren so I think that'll stick too. Thankfully noone wants any crazy out there name that I don't like lol.

We (well, my mum and dad) have finally come to a decision!!

They are gonna be Nannie G and Grandad while MIL/FIL will continue to be Nanny D and Ga.

Phew, one less thing to have to worry about... what's next on the list?!!!

mine arte both nanny ''nanny kaz and nanny rose'' and grandad is grandad as the is only him

I think for the most part kids will decide on their own what they want to call their grandparents.

My mom has hinted she wants to be called Grammy though lol

I don't think we'll have a single "typical" grandparent name in the bunch--my parents will be Bubbe and Zeyde (Yiddish for grandmother & grandfather) and husband's parents will be Nainai and Yeye (Mandarin chinese for GM and GF). So at least no one will get confused!
