Just as the title states, when did you start solids just for fun? At Luke's 2 month shots, his Pedi mentioned that at our next appointment we'd discuss starting on some solids for fun. Luke will be 4 months when we go in, and from the reading I've done it says between 4-6 months now is when parents start, just to get babies used to the texture and stuff.

Of course as long as the baby has doubled in birth weight and can hold their head up without wobbling, can sit up assisted, etc.

My first was 2 days of 6 months, well be aiming to do the same this time round. No point rushing I say wait as long as poss so much easier when just on milk! Also I did baby led weaning may be something to look in to

Any specific reason for waiting until 6 months? I'm not being rude or condescending, I'm genuinely curious as to what's "the norm".

I think it was about a week or two before my LO was 6 months.

I was in no rush.

my LO had some digestive issues (in hindsight this was because of the CMPI) so I was not keen on making it worse with food.

I started weaning VERY slowly.

cmpi?

Aiming as close to 6 months (not before 5 months) as possible as this is when is recommended. I have an appt to discuss weaning with the doctor next week as unsure what to give him other than veggies due to his CMPI/Soy/egg intolerance. He has enough issues with his tummy without aggravating it with solids early.

Rio was 16 weeks, and I was advised to start him on solids then by his pedi at the hospital, he was 8 weeks premature and apparently needed starting on solids that early due to iron storage? my health visitor says she has never heard such nonesence and I shouldn't have touched solids until he was 6 months, but I listened to his doctor, and he liked them from 16 weeks so I carried on! x

You could request an appointment with a dietician? I had one ... she was useless :haha: but i think that was just the particular one I saw.

She did give me some recipe books etc which were helpful.

Thanks ladies! I didn't know if there was a difference in location too (i.e US or UK).

from what i read on these boards us in the UK mostly wait to wean until 6 months, certainly most health professionals (not all) advise it.

Also you can read what is says on the NHS website regarding waiting to wean ...

4.5 months. I'd planned to delay but in our case it worked out better to start at the earlier end of the recommended age rather than the later end. I was sort of off and on with it at first and it's only been the last couple weeks we've gotten into the habit of 2 meals a day. She's doing really well and I'm always amazed by how well she's taken to feeding herself :) I love being able to eat dinner with her now.

Yeah in the UK 17 weeks minimum but 6 months as the optimum is recommended so I just went with that, was also told 6 months is the optimum for EBF babies so that was a driving force too, I believe less than 5% EBF until 6 months here though. Most people I know wean 4-5 months.

We started at about 5 and a half months-ish. Sophie was 5 months on Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day kept grabbing my food. We waited for a few weeks after this then started offering her food (BLW). She could sit unassisted, bring food to her mouth and chew it so was obviously ready. There's no stopping her now. She loves her food :D

The guidelines are 6 months but really all babies are different. Nothing magical happens at exactly 6 months on the dot. Some babies might not even be ready for solids at 6 months! I think it's best to be baby-led as your baby will let you know when they are ready.

I personally wouldn't have given solids before 5 months as I wanted to do BLW. I would personally feel less comfortable doing purees as you just don't know if they are ready. Saying that though I know one of my friends has started given their 4 month old baby purees due to his reflux and it's working for them.

As with everything else each to their own I guess :D

We started at 6 mo. We were waiting to do BLW. He gagged a lot so we held off for another week. Tried again and he coped much better. I wasnt in a rush, and the advice in the uk is to wait until 6 mo if possible (earlier if discussed with gp for reflux etc).

started some rice cereal at about 4 1/2 months, offered it once or twice a day, if that to get him used to the idea of the spoon and texture.

He gets a small container of puree with pretty much every meal, now and that started right around the 6 month mark. It wasn't an intentional thing, just kind of happened that way.

I started with my first at 5 months and one week and 6 months with my second. It's best to wait until about 6 months though. X
