When did you start using a duvet instead of sleep bag?

I was thinking now that the weather is getting a bit cooler I might start using a duvet for lo but I'm not sure what tog and if I should get a pillow as well?? I have a toddler duvet thing that's 4.5 tog, is that suitable?? When did you change to a duvet and how did lo get on, I worry that he would throw it off. xxx

On Monday :)

She had outgrown her 2.5 tog bags but needed to go in a warmer one, so we just thought let's try a duvet. She loves it. Ruby has had a pillow since about 18 months but they're fine from 12 months. Ruby doesn't throw the duvet off so far.

I'll be watching this thread, i've been wondering about this too. Just lately lo has been getting a bit tangled up in her sleeping bag and waking up in frustration.

Claire - does Ruby wriggle around much in her sleep? My lo moves all over the place at night, so i'm not sure if a duvet would work for us atm?

We changed Tom at 19 months - he was getting tangled up in the sleeping bags and waking up all the time. He sleeps so much better under the duvet - he doesnt throw it off and loves being snuggled down in it.

We haven't used a sleeping bag since the start if the summer as LO was getting too hot.... I used a blanket up until about 3 weeks ago... then a pillow a few nights ago. The duvet is taking abit of getting used to... Lucy does tend to sleep on top of it rather than under it. I usually end up putting the blanket back on during the night. I will persevere as I want her cosy in the winter. I have resorted to dressing her in babygrows instead of PJ's for the time being.

She recently stopped moving around so much. Before though, she was the wriggliest baby / toddler ever!

AJ got both a pillow and duvet just after his 1st birthday :)

I've never used a sleeping bag. I started them off in blankets.

My son was 6 months when we started using a duvet-just for a couple of months before summer started.

My daughter was just over a year.

With both of them we would put them to bed without the duvet on and then once they were asleep put the duvet over them. They never really woke up when we did this so no idea how to get over that.

I can't remember what tog it is but it's a children's duvet so i assume not too hot.

Generally over here they suggest not using a duvet until they reach 1 year however where my SIL is from they use them pretty much from the start and never have problems.

Pillow wise - we gave our son a pillow when he went into his new bed with his new bedding - he was 2 1.2 at the time. More often than not he doesn't actually use it. TBH i wouldn't give them a pillow until they ask for it - they don't really need them.

Zachary was in a sleeping bag from just a few weeks old until 13 months. We realised then that he was getting frustrated being unable to stand up in it or roll over without tangling it around his legs.

We then gave him a small cushion to see what he thought of having something pillow-like and he enjoyed snuggling under it lol. At 14 months we introduced a proper toddler pillow and a duvet. He really likes to burrow under things so hasn't got the hang of using his bedding properly yet - the duvet is a mashed-up mess after ten minutes of him being in there and the pillow is usually pulled over his head. It was a little worrying at first, but that's how he seems to like it.

We intentionally bought an organic wool duvet and pillow because they are breathable and will keep my LO warm in winter but cool in summer. The duvet doesn't have a formal tog, but I believe it's equivalent to a 7 tog "all-seasons" weight.

We started using a duvet a few weeks ago, once Roh worked out how to unzip and get out of his sleeping bag. He was waking up cold because he couldn't put it back on. I figured at least with a duvet he can cuddle back under it. He seems to love it.

I've tried Bun with a duvet but he doesn't want it in his cot at all. So we are still using the bags - ours go up to 36 months so there's lots of growing room still. I figure when we change to a bed we'll try again.

I was wondering this too, thanks for the thread xx

I tried Charlie with a duvet a few weeks ago but he kept throwing it off and waking up cold - so he's back in an 18-36m Grobag for now and has stopped waking up during the night. I've never seen anyone move as much while they are sleeping

Thanks all, sounds like I'll just need to try it out and see. Rhys has a blanket for naps so he may not be too bad getting used to having a duvet. I think I might try him this weekend and if he's not liking it I can always resort back to the sleep bag. Still wondering about the 4.5 tog though. xxx

Laila's had a pillow and duvet since she was 1. i'm not entirely sure what tog the duvet is, it's from a M&P set. she kicks it off if she's too hot anyway x
