When and how did you find out your baby's blood group?

I've looked all over her papers and red book but there's no mention of it. do they tell me later on or do I have to ask?

I dont think they check it unless there have been issues with babys health.

When I was born, it was put in my little book! I haven't found any hint of Isabella's blood group anywhere. It's important to know it in case there is ever a need for any transfusions in an emergency, I'd think (although they can use blood group O regardless of your blood group). Also for later on if they want to give blood.

I'm A+ but we are not sure what my husband's blood group is. I have a feeling it usually follows the mother's blood group, but I am not sure where I read that...

O is the most common blood type, closely followed by A.

I had to ask for both my sons blood types. I am O- so I needed to know in case they needed the anti D injections. Also, a rare blood type so good to know if either of my kids are a match but I did have to ask.

i was told at my sons birth when they did the heel prick tests. hes A+, my OH is O and Im A

i wasn't told. i know she's rhesus negative because they didn't have to give me any anti-d when she was born.
xx

I think it's important to know, as Lanky said you can get O in emergencies, but even still, I'm curious :)

You don't necessarily follow your mothers typing - my mom is O and my dad is A, I'm A as well. It's like a lot of Mendelian genetics...you have two alleles, one from your mother and one from your father. Your children have two alleles, one from yourself and one from your partner.

The A and B alleles are dominant over O alleles, therefore if your alleles are AO, you will be type A (like myself)

A and B are co-dominant with each other, therefore if you have an A allele and a B allele, you will be type AB

Sorry for the geek bit, just find it all fascinating and really interesting xx

I wasn't told, I tried looking for it a few weeks ago in her red book, but it wasn't there.

Thanks :flower:

I think I'm just gonna ask the doctor to find out. Waiting till there's a problem doesn't make any sense to me. What if, like someone said, there's an emergency?

I asked when he was born as I am O- and had to have anti-d injections and was curious. He is O+.

I've got a funny story about that. My mom thought the same thing but she assumed it was true and never bothered to ask a doctor what me or my brothers' blood type is. So I've always thought I was O+ like her. Well during one of my blood checks while I was pregnant I saw them typing on the computer that I'm A+ and I asked if they're sure and they were of course. As soon as I got home I was on the phone with my mom asking her what my dads blood type is. She said A+ and I was like OMG mom you never thought about the fact that A is dominant over O?! I'm glad I know now though! I keep messing with her now telling her to send a blood type testing kit I found online to my brothers for christmas :haha:

I'm O RH NEG so needed to have a couple of jabs during pregnancy and then after Isaac was born, they took some cord blood and tested it. I only found out on day 10, when the MW came round, after I asked her specifically to find out. Turns out he too is O RH NEG.

Otherwise, it wasn;t noted anywhere.

I was never told but I am very curious :) I am O+ and hubby is O- so would be nice to know and put it into her baby book!

Thanks :flower:

It's not routinely checked in uk unless there is an issue (like mum being rh -ve). There isn't much point in knowing as in an absolute emergency they will just give o neg. If they have time they would do a cross match which takes about 30 mins. There are antibodies other than the rhesus ones to check for and a hospital just wouldn't trust anybody saying what the bloodgroup is, it's too dangerous-as demonstrated above mistakes can be made. I didn't know my blood group til I got pregnant :)

they told me right in the hospital after he was born

They told me in hospital as I'm B- and turns out DD is B+

We were hoping she'd be O+ or O- as they're the most common on both sides but it doesn't really matter.

Hospitals will always check blood groups before giving blood (unless O in an absolute emergency) as Bumpintherun says.

So not much point in knowing. I only know my blood group because I donate blood x
