Where to get something appraised?

I recently was given a ring left from my grandfather's house. I don't know much about it but I am wondering where I should get it appraised? A local jewelry store or a Jareds, Kays etc? I never have gotten anything done before, but it is an older ring and I want to make sure I take care of it correctly.

Personally I would go to an independent jewellery store. No offence to anyone but you're more likely to get a trained jeweller appraising it than someone that's only been working in a store. Xx

Thanks, turns out the local store is cheaper and the owner appraises so I don't have to wait a month to get it done.
