Why do we write "xmas"?

I dont get it why do we write xmas? Just for sake of abbreviation? If you say xmas out loud it sounds nothing like christmas?

I just thought it was people couldnt be arsed writing Christmas all the time as Xmas is shorter and since we all send out so many cards noadays!

It is short for Christmas, the X meaning "Chi" or the first letter of Christs name in greek.

Same! I was taught that too and on the Christmas countdown on the Iphone it says it too! lol
