Darcey is 17 months old in August and she still has a bottle before her afternoon nap and before bed. I keep reading on here about stopping them drinking from a bottle and would like to know why? She drinks water from a sippy cup and a cup with a straw and is fine, but her bottle relaxes her before she goes to sleep, so why stop that when she is still quite little really.

Just wanted to know your thoughts.

Thanks

I'm not really sure why they say to stop it. Is it something to do with their teeth? DD sucks her thumb, so if her teeth are going to be knackered from that then a bottle won't do much more damage! She is 2.5 and still has a bottle before bed. We are thinking about trying to wean her off it and give her more milk during the day, but that's more because we want her to eventually go to bed without a pull up on, rather than anything else. If they like it i don't see a problem. :)

ETA: She drinks water and milk fine from a sippy and from an open beaker, so it's not affected her in that way.

evening ladies my son is 15 months old and still has 3-4 bottles of milk a day my health visitor has told me on numerous occasions to stop giving him a bottle and every time my reply has been he is my child and if im ok with him still having a bottle what has it got to do with ne body else. my little fella will not go to sleep with out his bottle he has one in the morning about 7 another around 11 as thats nap time then another around 3 and his last one at 8/8.30 for bed and to me im fine with it so bugger what everybody else has to say. phew rant over x

My little man is nearly 20 mths and has a bottle morning, afternoon and night! I came to the conclusion today that I need to stop it. This decision came after he bit the entire top of the teat off in one fell swoop lol! He was soaked lol

My LO still has 3 bottles but we need to cut this down.

We've been told to wean her off so she can eat more solids, won't ruin her teeth and she won't be getting too much and ending up overweight.

My LO has a bottle of milk in the morning and night...........she loves her milk.
My eldest went off milk at 16 months old and dairy...so it was a real nightmare getting dairy into her diet therefore i'm really happy that my youngest still enjoys it but will only drink warm milk out of a bottle.
she drinks water out of bottles/beakers/open cups/straws so she has no problem with that.

i do eventually want to phase out the bottle although she literally only has it for a few minutes in the morning and few minutes before bed. i think the whole teeth issues is when a child constantly has the bottle in their mouths as its then sort of similar to a dummy and/or not brushing teeth before bed and if they drink juice from it.

Willow still has 2 a day.
They say you should wean them off bottles because of the way the teat makes milk swirl around the mouth which is bad for their teeth.

i dont plan on weaning Willow off them anytime soon.
Maybe once she is 2
:D

My goal was to be off bottles and anything other than a cup by 2.
Ethan stopped his last bottle from about 15mo but we took our time with it, and even now he has a special sipper kind of cup that is still the 'sipping from a cup' mouth shape for his night time milk, and I'm in no rush to stop that really. Any milk or drinks in the day he has from a cup. We started using this sipper when he was 15mo purely to switch him from bottles and he took to it straight away. If he hadn't of liked it though I'd have had no problem waiting a bit longer. I think as a mummy you know your baby best and that's the most important guideline to follow - I don't see any problems with use of bottles unless is a lot. I do see toddlers 3+ with bottles of juice hanging from their mouths - that's where the problems occur, but a couple bottles of milk a day for little ones who are still only tiny really, that's a little different imo!

Here is the sipper we use for his night time milk and I'd really recommend this for when/if you try to wean off bottles. https://www.tommeetippee.co.uk/product/explora_active_sipper_/

Hi :flower:
The reasons are (as far as I'm aware) for teeth and language development.
Teeth, because having formula milk or juice (or anything that isn't water or fresh milk) from a bottle means that it sits on the teeth for longer as opposed to drinking it directly. I don't see how this is any different from those straw cups though (not a fan!) Language, becuase drinking properly from a cup (along with eating solids and other things of course, not just dropping bottles) help to develop a different set of mout movements ready to make different sounds and extend language. Again, I don't see how drinking from a straw cup is different really.

Holly has a bottle at bedtime and I have absolutely no problem with it at all!

If she asks for milk in the morning or during the day, she has it in her beaker.

Her speech is fabulous (she's been assessed in nursery and they put her at the level of a 3 yr old) and her teeth are great (she's due her 2nd dentist check up tomorrow and everything is dandy).

For her, it's a little comfort thing when she's winding down for the day - she's never really had a dummy, doesn't suck her thumb etc, and I am happy to be guided by her.
