I'm due to go back to work in September however I really DON'T want to..

Shortly before going on maternity leave my work changed my hours from 3pm-7pm to 4am-8am.. Now having a baby I really don't think I will be able to cope with these hours and a baby. I would rather look for another job that is more suitable for our family's needs.

Do I have to return to work? If I don't go back will I need to pay all my maternity pay back?

Any help would be great!!x

As long as you give the appropriate notice period that's fine. Were you just paid standard SMP, or was there an occupational pay scheme too, i.e. enhanced pay? If the former then no. If the latter, then depending on the terms of your contract, possibly.

^wss plus if you do have to go back for a while you will also have all your accrued holiday so u might not physically be there long depending on terms?!

As others have said definite no to SMP. Enhanced pay depends, in my current job I wouldn't have to, but in my last 2 I would have had to go back for 3 months or pay the enhanced pay bit back, this seems to be quite standard in public sector enhanced pay from the policies I've looked at.
