Will you be giving your baby a dummy/pacifier?

PS I haven't voted either as there is no maybe option!

as me and my sister were bought up without one - it hasnt even crossed my mind to use one. and for many many reasons i dont think i will xx

I think your baby will make up your mind for you when its here. My DD didnt have one until she was 2 months old because she was a very "sucky" baby and my poor boobs were suffering - and I hated people putting their fingers in her mouth - YUK.

However, I know loads of moms who didnt need to give their kids dummies/pacifiers because they didnt need them - and I know alot of babies who wouldnt accept them

I think you shouldnt introduce them to begin with but if they need them, thats why their invented :)

In an ideal world I wouldn't use a dummy, but practically I will probably end up using one to help settling when bubba is young. My OH is 100% against them though (let the arguements ensue!) although he has never looked after a baby/changed a nappy etc, so we shall see!

From personal experience I had a dummy myself - until my 3rd birthday when the dummy fairy came and took my dummies for the newborn babies.....my teeth are straight, I have no speech problems.
My bro on the other hand (older and my mum's first) didn't have a dummy, sucked his thumb until school age and has a lisp and protruding teeth needing braces....

i will give a dummy for sleep since it reduces SIDS risk

personally i hate them!

for all the reasons already said and they look so ugly. i want to be able to see my babys face.

some other cons are

getting sore skin and rashes around the mouth.

some babies wake up and scream every 5mins in the night if they spit their dummy out and can't find it.

it can be really tough and cause alot of upset to your child when all of a sudden they're not allowed it anymore.

i've seen all these problems in children i've looked after in nurseries. it's fair to say that not ALL children are badly affected but ALOT are.

i wouldn't be critical of others choices because frankly it's none of my business but i will never use them

I think the key point to make here is 'moderation', just like anything else, too much is never going to be good.

The FSID recommed you give baby a dummy to reduce the risk of SIDS  so yes, I will be trying to give baby one, as will do anything possible to lower that risk. Whether baby will take one, is another thing altogether, my Son never would and my youngest was off hers by 5 months x

Yes, my boobies. They seem to work fine for DD.

ETA: I guess if he ends up wanting to sleep in his cot then I will need to consider a dummy for the SIDS reduction, but we are planning on co-sleeping and my experience of my daughter was she only slept on me.

Oh yes, being a human dummy- got tat to look forwardto again :haha: lol x

I will try baby on a dummy but if they dont want it then i wont force it....Emily never wanted one so was lucky that we didnt need them.

i will be using a pacifier mainly because i sucked my fingers until 12 yrs old and i would rather not have my baby do the same...she is already sucking on her thumb in my womb and its easier to stop a pacifier than a finger..but if she doesnt want it, i wont force it..its totally up to what kind of comfort she requires when she is born.

I tried to give one to my daughter, but she never really took to it. And then when my son came, I didn't even bother with one. I nurse, and they were happy with that and never needed a paci.

I will if it helps soothe baby. My first child wouldn't take a paci. I think it was because he was a preemie and wasn't given a paci in the NICU since they don't want them using energy since it makes them lose weight. I tried to give him one after he came home, but he wanted no part of it. When he got a lil bigger he would actually throw it. Now my second baby was addicted to the paci. And OMG we paid for it if we lost the thing. But luckily he gave it up quite easily when he was ready. So if this next baby likes a paci, he/she can have one for awhile at least.

I will probably give him one, but not until after the first month or so-- my understanding is it's best to get breastfeeding really established (if you are doing that, which I plan to) before introducing something else to suck on. But it also depends-- I never used one, and my brother had one until he was 3 or 4 years old. Some kids never go for it.

Yes, it is said it can reduce the risk of cot death so we will use one. I have used one for my other kids. Their teeth are fine. My eldest sons adult teeth are straight.

No, I won't be. I think because, although I, and we all, have the best intentions ever (she will be sleeping in her own bed/cot/ I wont be feeding off to sleep etcetc, whatever your personal aims are) when you have a baby and especially when you have other children too- you literally do anything for their happiness, your sanity, and a little peace...which is why you see so many 3/4/ year olds walking round like giant mute babies with a pacifier. So basically, I'm saying I don't entirely trust that if I used one, and my LO loved it, I would make enough effort to stop her using one later on if it meant quiet nights and no screaming! Also a few friends had a lot of problems at night time with it popping out, and it began to stop them getting sleep as they were getting up each hour. However, I appreciate other mums want to and it never changes my perception of them as a mother!

With my 7 babies I breastfed.. they wouldn't take a dummy.. even though I wanted them to!

I didn't use or even buy them in just incase with my 2 girls...and have no intention of using one with this baby...

it depends on what baby wants. if he/she is ok without one then i wont give one but if i think he/she would be happier with one then ill try one.
ollie was a terrible sleeper so we gave her one, she still has it now when shes tired but doesnt wander round with it in her mouth all day lol x
